u wanna go with the shuttle mobo, if not too expensive. and never buy refurbished. even though cheap, will cause problems. and if ur ocing, then get the amd, but if not, get a p4

That CPU is definitely faster than the 2.0 Celeron.

As for the motherboard check out the ECS K7S5A Pro rev. 5.0

Good budget oriented board that has a lot to offer.

Get the Athlon not the Celeron.

Do you want reliability and stabillity? Then don't overclock. That's my opinion.

If you're looking for extreme performance then this setup is not for you. It will be fast but not extreme.

ocing doesn't really screw up ur pc if u know how. if u go little by little, it's fine. get the athlon

no, i dont want extreame. i only want this to play game occasionnaly. me not hardcore gamer. i use this for running paintshop or surfing net mostly.

the reason i want to oc is becuz of what abu said. and most ppl i know who has a amd has it overclock.

This setup should do you fine then.

As for the overclocking, that's up to you but again I say (for what you want to do) you want reliability and stabillity not the fastest it will go. You won't notice the difference anyway.

Why would abu be your trusted reference anyway?

About the jumpers. When you get your board there is a manual that shows step by step instructions on how to set it up. If you still have problems then just come back here with your questions.

i notice a lot of ppl using the board u (virtual) gave me links to are using a amd 1700 processor. so would this amd 1800+ processor (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?DEPA=0&submit=Go&description=N82E16819103354) be ne slower to the 2000+?

Virtualbody1234

A bit slower yes. But you can run the Athlon 2100+ or even 2400+ if you have a the extra cash.

One other thing I noticed about your link to the 2100+ is that it's OEM. If at all possible get the 'retail' version instead of OEM. Retail has an included cooler and a much better warranty.

I have a Shuttle board and it is a pretty decent board.I would likely go with it over the ECS board myself, but that is only my opinion. There is nothing wrong with the ECS board though.I also have an Athlon XP 2200+ that I have overclocked up to 1.96 gig and it is absolutely as stable as anything else I have ever used.I run very good temps even while playing games(35-42 degrees).
You may want to look for a board that will handle ram faster than 266mhz though.Look for a board that will run faster ram therefor you won't have to upgrade your board for a few years. I bought my board not knowing much about front side bus speeds and ram speeds and what not and now I am looking for a new board so I can support faster ram,if I had done some reading in the first place I may not have to upgrade now.
Oh,and by the way.Never ,and I mean never buy a PC Chips board. They are absolute junk.
Good luck to you.

How about this board http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?...rtby=14&order=1 (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=22&manufactory=1314&DEPA=1&sortby=14&order=1) .It supports faster ram and gigabyte is a pretty good manufacturer.I had one of their boards and I loved it and it is only about 10 bucks more than you were looking to spend.

thnx for the tips and link john and virtual body. does that differ much from the 2100? and btw, what does throughbred mean?

kazaaliterock
10-26-2003, 06:58 AM
oh btw, my comp right now has a celeron 1.8 ghz cpu. i know the 2000+ and above will be faster but will the amd 1800+ be faster as well?

The Thoroughbred a replacement for the Palomino series CPUs. It is the technonlogy use in the fabrication process. The Palomino is µ18 and the Thoroughbred is µ.13 which is much smaller. With CPUs, smaller is better, they can run faster and cooler.

Here is a picture to compare the two. The Thoroughbred is at the left:

Check out this page: ---> http://www.pantherproducts.co.uk/Product%2...roughbred.shtml (http://www.pantherproducts.co.uk/Product%20Reviews/AthlonXP%20Thoroughbred.shtml)

And, yes, an AMD 1800+ is faster than a 1.8 Celeron.
