Without having to buy new hardware, or even opening the case, is their any software that I can install that would (somehow) make my PC quieter? Thanks.

With out sheding out cash on silent fans/fins or water mate the best you'll get most prob is something like this. Then only if mobo supports it.Theres loads of little apps like these ,you may have to search for one according to you mobo. This is just an old link i had.Major geeks.com is a good place for these type of utilities.

some hard drives come with bootable disks where you can adjust settings on noise levels.
Check your manufacturer's website.

Most software would just slow things down or stop things which could effect performance! If your really wanting a diffrence then upgrading fans etc (or even replacing fans with heat distributers as sugested) would by the best way. Although I cant really say anything about software for quieting hardware cause i havent tried it!

If the HARDWARE is noisey, then you cant make it quieter. Clean it, Buy a new one. :D

if its your harddrive which is making the noise
there is an option on most pc's which allows you to put your harddrive in "silent mode"

you could try a program callled 'speedfan' which allows you to control the speed ofyour fans, remember the lower the fan speed = less noise and higher temps, so keep a eye on them, i dont need to worry about this as i pc is almost silent :P

Risky?

Hmmmm... depends on your definition.
If you mean "Will my PC end up as an unbootable puddle of plastic and capacitors that makes my room smell funny", then yes, I would say that it's risky.

But I'm not sure how the French define "risky".

I believe there is an options in Windows XP for this. Is it your harddrive which makes the noise? If so go into your PC'S bios and change settings for your hd.
