A glottal stop is a speech sound articulated by a momentary, complete closing of the glottis in the back of the throat. Glottal stops occur in many languages and usually pattern as consonants.

Excse me for this but .... Fucking Brilliant.

I never thought you would actually do it. Audio Visual aids are always so much better

Can I suggest that everyone download these files. They are only ~30k and explain the concept better than a thesis of any length.

Eyes watering with laughter btw.

PS I hope this is not links to copyright material.

I have tears in my eyes too. That second pronounciation is so funny

More of that!

I suggest the following: everyone who has a mic records the word 'glottal' as she/he would pronounce it

I opened the thread because I had the same idea.

If you can't host the sounds yourself, then http://www.uploadit.org./ could be used.

If they don't allow *.mp3 just change it to *.jpg and we can change it back.

Liam may even consider hosting them for a wee while.

Got it now.

Skweeky - you need to do one with the glottal stop as well. For comparison purposes.

I do agree you have a particularly nice speaking voice tho'.

Spider - Is it even possible for you to do one where you don't do it.

J'Pol

Wee person, another nice voice, though I am not surprised.

Come on now chaps, we need to hear it both ways.

Compare and contrast sort of thing.

First of all: JPaul, where is yours?

Secondly, can you all do these words for me:

stop

pot

bottle
eighth
water

Third: that's the only way I can pronounce 'glottal'

I need it for school  (I really do, we need to do a comparative language study!)

LMAO

ty Nigel, we're waiting for yours :D
If Lamsey keeps that website for K-lite voices going, I will send him my voice for his archief! 100kb maximum I believe? I am not sure how to measure it, but it will not be tonight! [/b][/quote]
Well, the 100kb limit is kinda screwed by the longer samples with longer words... just do your best and I'll get the filesize down.

Summary:
A board, with its own page, filled with board members voices, hosted by one of the board mods...

Ut moet nie gekker worre!

Linda

Do me a favour - Send Liam an mp3 of you saying

"Ut moet nie gekker worre!"

I would love to hear you say it.

For preference also send an mp3 of you saying an English translation as well.
