The K-Lite Codec Pack is a collection of DirectShow filters, VFW/ACM codecs, and tools. Codecs and DirectShow filters are needed for encoding and decoding audio and video formats. The K-Lite Codec Pack is designed as a user-friendly solution for playing all your audio and movie files. With the K-Lite Codec Pack you should be able to play all the popular audio and video formats and even several less common formats.

At least the K-Lite codec pack survived, it's very popular and gives us an idea where
Kazaa might be today if it wasn't for the music industry sueing them to death.

K-Lite Codec Pack + MPC + VLC.

If you use Videolan you do not need any codec pack.
I've been using Videolan for a couple of weeks now because it uses less memory then MPC HC. I uninstalled all codecs (K-Lite Codec Pack) and I havenīt found a videofile Videolan couldnīt play.

CCCP is a very outdated pack. last update was 8 month's ago.
CCCP has a version of ffdshow that is 300+ builds older than the revision that is selectable in the latest K-lite pack

Hey don't get me wrong ,k-lite is great and up to date, but matroska even though its outdated, just does the job fine for my crappy machine. I've not got a 5.1 ac3 system that's quad core or anything, Just saying i'll stick with the good ole matroska, I'll probably give k-lite a go at sometime.

Are these codec packs safe to use?

I once installed the K-Lite pack and it gave me trouble with FF7's FMVs - namely, the game would freeze every time one was supposed to be played. After uninstalling the pack and using ffdshow-tryouts, the problem was solved.
