Adobe is done with the iPhone
Apr 21, 2010 15:15:30 IST

" In a blog post (http://www.mikechambers.com/blog/2010/04/20/on-adobe-flash-cs5-and-iphone-applications/), Mike Chambers of Adobe has declared that Adobe will stop investing in the packager for iPhone.

During MAX 2009 quite a while back, Adobe had excitedly previewed a new technology (http://www.thinkdigit.com/Internet/Adobe-MAX-2009-Adobe-sneaks-Flash-content_3518.html) which allowed them to bring Flash applications to the iPhone despite the lack of a Flash Player for the platform. This tool was essentially a cross-compiler, which compiled Flash code to iPhone compatible binaries, thus bypassing Apple’s restriction.

Since then Apple has changed the terms (http://devworks.thinkdigit.com/Mobiles-PDAs/Apple-revises-SDK-terms-banishes-Flash-once_4381.html) for developing applications using their SDK (for their upcoming v4.0 update) which disallow such means of creating iPhone applications.

Adobe will no longer be investing time and effort into creating iPhone applications using their platform, and while the iPhone packager will ship with Flash CS5 it is no longer going to be actively maintained.

Adobe will instead be shifting focus to Android and other mobile platforms. For Android Adobe is considering releasing the same sort of native compilation tools as they did for iPhone in order to achieve better performance.

Adobe has been handing out private beta versions of AIR2 and Flash Player 10.1 for Android to prominent developers and the response has been quite positive, with most praising its performance. The iPhone packager though seemed to require quite some optimization before producing a well performing iPhone app.

If you have an Android phone, and are interested in testing Flash Player 10.1 and AIR 2 on Android, you can now sign up at the Adobe Labs website to receive updates for when the beta version is available publicly.

AIR 2 for Android signup (https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/entitlement/index.cfm?e=labs_air_android_signup) "

I wonder where the Apple fanboys are hiding?

Just more proof that Apple's elitist narcissism will be their end. Google has caught up, and surpassed Apple's success in less than a year. Exclusivity isn't looking so hot anymore, eh?

Google also has their OS on about 30 phones. Hardly a relative comparison.

And the iPhone is still the best phone on the market...and that's tough for me to admit.

Isn't HTML5 supposed to eliminate the need for Flash or something?

If HTML5 is widely accept then flash will drift into oblivion.

At the meantime iphone still the best in certain feature. Android phone will overtake iphone very soon. ATM the best android phone is HTC Legend, it's as good as iphone if not better that's why apple sue HTC for patent infringement. Apple try to ban HTC from entering US market.

The HTC Legend is not as good as the iPhone and definitely not better. Not even close actually. The Legend still uses Micro SD cards for memory, so if you want 32GB of memory like my 3GS, you'll have to go spend another $200+ dollars on a memory card. That's an additional $200+ after you buy the $500 phone.

Apple has mastered the touch screen with the iPhone. That is something no other manufacturer has been able to do as other touch screens still remain clunky. And the biggest sell for the iPhone is the App Store. There is nothing you can't find in the App Store. There is an app for everything.

For some reason no matter which iPhone I get the home button is fucked within 12mnths.

The AppStore is great I must agree, I don't think any phone can claim what Apple has done with their AppStore. With the ability to Jailbreak it's even better. I don't think Apple even attempts to fix exploits like Sony does.

I don't know. I don't believe it's just me who has this issues with it, A Google search (http://tinyurl.com/32c67ek) proves that.

My stance on Apple is neutral I'm not a fanboy and I'm not a hater. Just some tactics piss me off what Apple does with iTunes on Windows and Syncing apps.
