For six grand, you could build your own LAN, with four good computers, have your mates round for parties.

Read the spec of that IBM machine carefully.

Although it has a pretty picture of a flat panel monitor, that is NOT included with the system.
The hard drive size is 36.4GB. This is not very big, so you will probably need to add another. But it may be one of the new WD 10,000 rpm Sata drives which should be v fast.
And the Graphics processor, that well known 3Dlabs Wildcat4. (It may be very good, but I've never heard of it).
No Speakers.
No Modem.

You haven't quoted any prices, but I'm assuming they are around the same price. If so, the Gateway machine wins hands down (but find out the actual size of the HD).

DarthInsinuate
10-27-2003, 10:06 AM
basically the same as lynx said about the IBM, its crap

but the Gateway doesn't look too good either:

- i have a thing against Nvidia cards, they are fast but apparently not as fast as the ATI equivilent, also the extra RAM on the card does very little in improving performance

- the machine doesn't come with RAM?

- the machine doesn't come with CD/DVD drive?

that's a professional 3D card. if you're a professional 3D graphics designer, you'd want to buy a card like that. if you're buying a card for video games, look elsewhere because the card and its drivers are geared toward completely different tasks.

gateway=suck! i hate them and can't wait 4 them 2 die. neva buy a gateway.

they're slow, clunky, and all around crappy. when i first started this job and took over the network, all my office had were gateway's (3 years ago). back then they weren't so bad but since windows 2000 and xp has come out, their puters SUCK! I now buy Dell.

Plus, the rip u off if u ever want 2 upgrade. i would build my own or visit - Cyber Power Inc. (http://www.cyberpowerinc.com) - they have great pricing and coo cases.

u would get alot better pc for your money buying the bits yourself, it not hard to do, you will have a wide range of cases so u can choose how it looks, and also you will know the ram and mobo etc will be quality parts. and not cheap mobo and ram etc to save money as alot of companies do now adays.

Your folks are whacked for giving you $6000 for a computer. For $3000 you could get an excellent one, prebuilt. For $2000 you could build a very nice one.

Let me get this straight. You have $6000 to spend on PC equipment, and you're going to blow it all on one machine?

$1250 will buy you the components to make a very good computer. If you build 4 such computers, you still have $1000 to set up an ethernet network, buy a router, set up printer sharing, even get furniture.

Don't be an idiot. That is far too much money to waste on a single PC.

man, i think we need some answers to answer your question better:
So you have 6k, what do you want your computer to do?
Do you play games, (LAN)?
Do you do multimedia stuff? (make movies, run Adobe products, 3D imaging)
What level of computer expierience do you have???
i.e. begginer -guru (feel confident to make your own computer, want us to walk you through it) - i would do that if ya needed it!
Answer those and i can further help you pick a system that fits you NEEDS and not boast things you are never going to use etc...

1st question: where did u get 6 grand? hmm....

with 6000, u can buy urself ur own server and ur own pretty nice comp, if u build it. forget the gateway. licks monkey balls. the ibm licks even more monkey balls. build a comp with like 2 terabytes of hd space, and like a 9800 xt with hl2, and p5, with 8 gb of ram. lol.. and maybe a surround lcd screen. but i would just get a projector thingy.

SciManAl
10-28-2003, 02:06 AM
i would get that new holoprjecter that came out!!! 3k but well worth it!!!! up to 256 inches of projection of fully 3d dimensionall objects that are interactable(you could just touch the head of the person and geta a head shot in CS ~lol~ hehehe

But thats alot...I dont know why yall are telling him to set up like 4 computers and put it on a network to play games...id rather just have one super ass computer. Maybe he has no friends to play with

Also with that much i would wait for the new Pentium, that way you are up to date with 64bit Technology!

Thats exactly what I was pondering about, and I havnt heard anything about the new 3.8Ghz chips as stock, so im pretty positive on the only conclusion,

Those bastards are overclocking their chips! Thats probably why that side bus is also 933, instead of the usual 800 I believe.

EDIT: check this out, at the bottom of their page! Those bastards are stock overclocking to fool the newbs!!!

* Intel Pentium 4 HyperThreading CPU accelerated @3.8GHz (3.2GHz native clock speed).
** 933MHz Accelerated System Bus from 800MHz base clock speed

CHEATERS!!!!!

At bigdawg

If by means of the 64 bit chip your talking about, Have you heard about the Intel EE that they released, coincindentally right when the AMD FX, and regular 64 Bit processor came out? Hah, another attempt by Intel to not look as though they are falling behind and starting to lose the edge in the market they once had to AMD.

ahh, the American legal system strikes again - i still think spending so much on one thing is a bad idea, the bugger might breakdown or become outdated, with $20,000 you could by a kick-ass computer and some spare parts or upgrades when the time comes

wat i would do with 1.5 million (lol) is to start a company. doesn't have to be really really big. just start out with like some factory, or hotel chain, or watever. in a couple of years, ur income will have 1.5 million X a lot. then u can buy all the pc's u want, and buy an island, and build a castle, and retire there

Buy a 3.2GHz P4, a freezer, and then make it a 4.4GHz ninja

Note: This can be done...

Or, you could buy one of the Apple G4s which are being hailed as the fastect computers in the world. I saw an article somewhere where you could shove windows into it...

EDIT: All of you non believers about that 500GB hd are wrong. It does exist. Its RAID, which from what I hear is twin HDs.

Damn, I can't put up all the things you get with this PC. Well go to Alienware Area 51 Extreme (http://www.alienware.com/Configurator_Pages/area-51.aspx?SysCode=PC-AREA51&SubCode=SKU-EXTREME) and select everything you can. You get get twin 30 inch LCD monitors. Holy crap.
