Well, when you have hundreds of people behind the same IP... not to mention most trackers don't like proxies/VPNs, specially public ones.

if you are looking for p2p traffic, no such stable free option exist for you.

For surfing, just use itshidden.com, you don't need to waste valuable sources, you could use built-in windows vpn manager

PPTP? That's known to leak DNS data. Personally, I prefer anything that offers the possibility of using OpenVPN.

For low volume http traffic, use the Tor browser bundle. It's as slow as, but it's very secure (assuming you avoid flash etc).

Well, they are kinda hard to find free and with torrent support :)
But you are right, pptp is pretty old
