Is it like a new beta operating system from Microsoft?

its the newest OS. it wont be out and its posed to have even more features like a completely 3d interface and its official release will be in 2005/06. the beta floating around its prolly buggy and only worth a download if your very curious as to what it will be like althought its likely that the beta now and the official release in 3 years will look completely diffrent

Goto suprnova, there so many versions out now. The latest is 2051, nobody has tested it but its on suprnova. The latest, test, good version is 4029. It has a memory leak but theres a patch for it. Longhorn its totally differant from what we have seen before, take a look...

Longhorn is a beta, of corse things wont work. Its differant code and compatability. Some things work, most this work, but not all.

right now, Longhorn is basically XP with a few new features and some things changed around slightly. it uses Win2000/XP programs and drivers. by the time it finally comes out, it will prolly have a lot more differences from XP-- but so far it's nothing spectacular.

Longhorn is probably the code name for it, i.e. Nintendo Dolphin was re-named to the GameCube.

Does it revolve around a new API?

It is a project name.

Oh, and from what I have heard, its going to be as different from XP, as XP was from ME.
So if that means more graphical changes and annoying interfaces, keep it away from me.

Longhorn is just the code name given to that particular project. When it finally comes out around 2005 it will probably called Windows XP 2005 or something like that. The operating system following Longhorn is called Blackcomb but it is mostly a server oriented system.

Right now Longhorn is just a modified version of Windows XP. It still uses most of XP's API's and system files. It also looks very similar to XP because Microsoft has not bothered to implement the new GUI code-named "Aero" yet. Most programs will run on Longhorn like on XP because it still is 80% Windows XP.

The final version will have a totally new GUI that requires a 3D graphics card and a new filesystem called "WinFS".
