Or you can remove it with Add/Remove Windows Components.
Check here (http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=288) how to do it.

Windows 2000, Windows NT, and Windows XP all include the Messenger Service. It's enabled by default. Messenger allows system admins to send little messages to everyone on a network, alerting them when the server is going down, ect. The service makes a lot of sense on a corporate network, but home users don't need it. Here's how to disable it:

1. Right-click My Computer and click "Manage".
2. Click "Services and Applications".
3. Click "Services".
4. Scroll down to "Messenger" and right-click the entry.
5. Choose "Properties"
6. Under "Service status:" click STOP.
7. Under "Startup Type:" choose DISABLE
8. Click OK.

easiest way is to go to program files, locate messenger, and rename it to off or messengerOFF or something. when it says it'll make some progs not run, say yes. and ur done

that would definately do the trick, probably the most effective way too
but dont msn need msn messenger? if so you can keep it from starting up with windows or running in the bakground by tweaking its properties from the start menu

If I am not mistaken the post was about Msn Messenger why the f*ck is everyone posting on how to disable messenger service. There totally different things. One is an instant messengering client and other just sends these gay ass pop ups to you.

Get your facts straight!

reboot ur system or
go to msn.com and login or
open outlook express or
open MSN explorer (if u have it)

now look in task manager and look for messenger if it came back (very likely it will, cos there are other steps u might need to take)

Tweak XP Pro has an option to disable Messenger, if you are running XP. I used it because every time I would open Outlook Express the stupid messenger icon would pop up on the sys tray.
