Step 1 - Find the dos pathname and filename.

To do this right click on the folders name, click properties.
Now where it says dos name use that for your dos path.
Example: cd c:\myshar~1 http://www.angelfire.com/alt/kazaahomepage/screens/screen1.jpg
Before proceding: Repeat this step except right click on the file instead.

Notice to Windows ME/2000/NT/XP Users:
You can skip this step and use the regular program path and filename!

Step 2 - Go to regular dos command prompt window.

On your start menu, somewhere there should be a shortcut to MS-Dos Prompt.
If your using Windows ME/2000/NT/XP, it on a submenu and called COMMAND Prompt. http://www.angelfire.com/alt/kazaahomepage/screens/screen3.jpg
Click That
Type cd c:\(your program path) or for kazaa lite cd c:\myshar~1
http://www.angelfire.com/alt/kazaahomepage/screens/screen4.jpg

Step 3 - Running the program.

Type the ms-dos filename for the program
Example program.exe http://www.angelfire.com/alt/kazaahomepage/screens/screen5.jpg

Step 4 - Using program.

Depending on the program, most of the time when you run the program it will
list some paremeters. Reading the readme from the program usually helps out
with use. Sorry, I can't help with any more because dos progs vary in many way and is nearly impossible to discribe a generic guide.

Hope it helps some people!

Wow Dos the good old day's have a look here if you want to know the history of it.

For people who haven't used it the ~ in myshar~1 was because you could only do 8 digits in dos so windows finds it as that instead of myshared etc.

is your guide aimed more at win 9x machines since the shell with nt machines uses long file names. ;)

go to run and type
command

this will give you an old style dos prompt. B)

Nice guide... but now can you explain how to properly run DOS on XP ? 'cause XP has its own 'new' version of DOS which sucks, it makes everything lag and takes up 99% system resources, so for example, i can't program in C while doing something else in Windows... any suggestions ?

It's great well done its just some people didn't know about

For people who haven't used it the ~ in myshar~1 was because you could only do 8 digits in dos so windows finds it as that instead of myshared etc.

And thats because people don't use Dos much these days and I was just pointing out what "~" meant, keep up the good work, thanks.
