not to sound sarcastic, yet THERE ARE NONE.

There isn't any software to be considered "the Best" or "the worst", simply because each programmer for each software created it for a purpose, to function in specific way, under specific environments, for users to follow the guidlines/limitations set by software.

A large % of PC users do not follow and/or understand these facts, furthermore, ALL software/hardware availalbe to the public today are based on LOGIC, ZERO & ONE. Today's PC users expect illogical tasks from a logical electronic product. Simply put, there are no illogical based programs.

please spread the word out:
RESULTS WILL VARY
No matter how good your systems may be, they're only as effective as what you put into them.

All because Mr Kiler wanted someone to write him a shopping list; perhaps it's just force of habit - getting them from his mum all the time I suspect.

You know, the thread-starter might not have such a bad idea here. Maybe with less fighting and "noob" calling we can actually compile a list + hashes. I believe it would definitley be sticky-worthy, and nice to have a list like this. Here are some suggestions, keep adding people

Firewall: I hear sygate is good, but is it "overly complicated", that I'm not so sure. I'm doin some searchin to look for a firewall that I can minimize in my SysTray, won't keep poppin up with stuff, and protects me. and ZoneAlarm messes up my system. As I'm still looking here I cant give you a suggestion.

AV: Lets go with NAV 8.1 Corp. Nice stuff

Anti-Spyware: Spyware Sweeper coupled with WebWasher.

Internet Viewer: I use Mozilla, but I've heard good things about FireBird, I will try that.

As I get more ideas I'll edit this post.

SBC challenges RIAA's subpoenas

SBC Communications, the 2nd largest "Baby Bell" (regional phone operator, Verizon being the biggest "Baby Bell") in the U.S., has refused to hand out its subscribers' personal details to the RIAA.

Despite Verizon losing its similiar case in June, SBC has announced that it will fight every single one of the subpoenas in court if necessary or until the court decides that they have to hand out the details for every subpoena request they receive.

SBC has sued the RIAA over the subpoena demands in California. SBC is the biggest broadband provider in the U.S. with over three million broadband subscribers. It is also the only ISP since Verizon lost its case in June that has refused to co-operate with RIAA. RIAA has quickly responded to SBC's statements pointing out to a recent SBC's print advertisement that said, in part: "Download all the music you like. And all the music you sort of, kind of, maybe even a little bit like. Go MP3 crazy. Try new music. Build a song library. Whatever." and claimed the SBC's only motivation to protect its customers against RIAA is pure greed. According to SBC, last time the ad was run was in January 2002 and it is totally "irrelevant to the current issue of consumer privacy and protection".

What's this crap about not wanting resource hogging programs when the original post contained...

Computer is new so don't worry about min requirments

All these items in themselves will likely hog resources - be that memory, clock cycles or bandwidth:

Music Program (With good visulizers)
Word processing software with all those extra
p2p software
Add-on for SBC Yahoo! Messenger
Windows Visual Style changer (Taskbar color changer, etc)
...I mean, visual styles themselves take a huge chunk!

Now, why ask for all these:

Firewall (No bandwidth drinker)
Antivirus (no hoggy hog crap)
Ad Blocker (No bandwidth drinker)
Ad-Ware Buster with auto-protect (No resource hogger)
...when NIS (and other similar products) will do the first three and cripple the fourth?

I'm all for some sort of suggested software page but you can find reviews and comparisons all over the net, so why not look there?
