Newzbin source code leak confirmed - it's out in the wild
20th May '10

Had interesting side channel discussions on irc with Mr Code Thief. Initially, yesterday, he approached me and said he had the site code and databases. I thought he was probably a clown. Today he PM’d me with several lines of code. Caesium has just confirmed that these lines of code ARE from the site source code.

:source: Source: Newzbin source code leak confirmed - it's out in the wild somewhere.. (http://www.usenetshack.com/newzbin-source-code-leak-confirmed-its-out-wild-somewhere/)

So where's the NZB for the code :naughty:?

Has anyone actually found the code yet? I have read numerous blogs that says its in the wild, but no one has a link to the source code.

The 12 year old hackers that stole the code are doing the exact opposite of what you might expect from an ethical hacker.

Rather than putting it on usenet so anyone with enough money to run a server can run a Newzbin clone, they have kept it to themselves and will no doubt try to make large amounts of money out of it.

Basically, they are just criminal hackers out for the cash.

thats quite funny, "they are criminal hackers" who stole code that was used to make a website that was in essence breaking the law.

i hope thats a joke :yup:

Update:

I secured an interview with Mr White via IRC last night (the conversation has been tidied up a bit).
haha

...snip...
DS: Are you planning to change the way Newzbin works or is it going to be a straight clone?

W: We’ll be running a straight clone to start with but we want to change it eventually. Unfortunately the site backend is mega mega complicated so we’re concentrating on just getting the systems running with a minimum of falling over in the beginning. Plus, we also greatly underestimated the number & power of the servers needed to run this stuff so we’ve been trying to raise a metric fuckload of cash to buy gear.n00bs.

Of course, anyone who's been alive for more than a usec in the age of the internet, knows that such terms as 'criminal' and 'hackers' are totally dependent on ones 'location'.

Just as an aside, Newzbin2 is now up and alive, utilizing the same url. IP address maps to some colo in Sweden.

IMO, it's a very easy distinction. If your sole intent is to profit from hacking, you are a criminal. If your intent is to share the content, you're doing a public service.;)

On newzbin: looks like it was hacked 21 days ago then, which puts it after the court verdit. It looks suspiciously like an inside job with the full backing of the original team.
Really don't like the slapped on 3D effect header bars though.

Oh well. Speculations are pointless, but I must say this whole "ig0thaxed" thing looks rather suspicious.

Caesium gave the DB to someone he knew who now runs the site. Caesium still gets his cut, that's for sure. I know I would have done the same.
