Dvd Ripping

A question for all of you ripping masters.
Whats a decent software for ripping dvd's. Am I best axtracting the relevant files from the DVD or am I best getting a software to compress it???

I use Gordian Knot which will get all the .vob files of the main movie (without all the crap) straight to HDD...then convert to avi with this program...

google it, or go to dvdrhelp.com for a guide :D happy ripping
