Considering the mammoth task of resurrecting Newzbin, the fact we're seeing the site even partially operational is impressive. Although most of the site's features are intact (the search works, bookmarks work, the NZB index seems OK), apparently many things are still out of sorts (like NewzXXX.com and many other back end items.) Here's the latest update from Mr White and the Team R Dogs.

It's little surprise that Team R Dogs is running into their fair share of problems getting the site back to its former glory. Although interestingly enough, most of the comments around the web seems to indicate that people are generally very pleased with the functionality. Even more interesting is that many feel that even it Newzbin's crippled state, it’s still much better than any NZB indexing site out there.

Currently, Mr White reports that the system administrator is still trying to understand how the site works. There seems to have been enough progress made to at least get the site functional, but there's still a mountain of learning ahead of them.

"We are slowly getting our heads round the system. Mr Black is our codemeister, reluctant sysadmin and a total star, it'd be fair to say we'd be offline without him. We are hoping to take on a couple of contract sysadmins soon to take the load off Mr Black. Two other guys, Mr Blue and SomeOneElse, are playing useful roles. Props."

The big problem for the new Newzbin will likely be the MPA, who according to Mr White has already been noticed (http://bit.ly/aTpejW). With no revenue coming into the site, any legal defense will be tough to muster. We're also wondering how it's going to be possible to defend a site that has already been found liable for copyright infringement in the UK.

"This is somewhat less than surprising. Our first words were not "OMFG why?!? what have we done?! What can't they just let us be". We realised from the initial planning stages that we would be a target within about 1 day of coming online. We are prepared for our servers to be grabbed: we have multiple backups of the site and its databases both offsite, and on large USB drives distributed among friends. We are preparing backup sites (though these are not yet functional) and we have plan for new domains if our rented domain name gets yanked. We are in fast-flux mode."

resistance is futile...

What goes up must come down.
