The popular BitTorrent application uTorrent is pushing out their first 3.0 alpha release, merging a couple of their previous test builds to combine remote access via their very cool Falcon web-access feature with uTorrent's standard 2.1 beta. In addition to bug fixes, this build also adds the ability to disable UDP trackers, while slightly revamping the look of the client.

Why would anyone want to do that? They use less bandwidth than HTTP ones.

The vast majority does.

That extra security on the login is truly great, and looks very professional.

Also the web gui looks a little better with the graphical updates to it.

It was obvious that utorrent's goal was too make the web gui more accessible by everyday users.
As for a normal-below normal user setting up your ports and webgui could be a pain.

Making it open source would also be awesome.

But i really doubt that will happen just by reading their faq:

Is µTorrent open source?

No. It is not likely to become open source.

I know what you're getting at, but a Linux version is on the works according Firon, and tops the list on the idea bank with 4237 votes.

I know they are developing a linux version, let's see if it will be as good as in windows. (just saying... as i heard that the mac version sucks)

But still, would be interesting to see utorrent becoming open source. Just imagine the possibilities ;)

I dont think they will make it open source based on the fact its a cash cow in its current state with other companies.

Kinda like FST. Why change and get rid of the adds when they are making money hand over fist with them?

Being a newbie, I don't know the difference between alpha, beta, and open source. All I know is that I have utorrent version 2.0 and most private trackers are not compatible to it. My questions are: What utorrent version is best for downloading movies from private trackers? What happens to my old torrents.
Any help would be appreciated.

2.0.2 is the most accepted current version for all my trackers.
Alpha and beta are still in testing, so they are not stable.
If you upgrade from 2.0 to 2.0.2 all your torrents will stay without any problems.

The latest stable, it's the one you'll get if you go to uTorrent's home page and click "Download".

I'm sure a multi-million dollar software company can port a program with linux without exposing the code base.

(Might even just be a matter of packaging Wine with it lol)
