Wine

I have a movie on my laptop that I want to share with my wife.
Format of the file is .mkv. When I try to transfer it to USB I get an error(error code 0). I can watch the file without any problem with VLC player. It seems I can't transfer any .mkv files to USB.
Any way around this? Oh and I'm on a mac.

Any help much appreciated.:)

How big is the file? If it's over 4GiB then you need to make sure the USB stick is formatted with something other than FAT32.
Try NTFS.
Or, if you have Windows7 on both machines (or you're willing to install an update for xp and vista machines) then you can use exFAT.

Formatting loses all files on the drive so before formatting first backup the data to your hard drive.
Then go to my computer -> right click the usb drive -> format -> choose ntfs or exfat -> format.
Then move your data back.

Yes, the file is over 4Gb but less than 8GB, USB takes 8GB.
So I am on a mac and my wife is on windows xp. Can I still try to format to NTFS and it works with both my mac and wife's windows xp?

Thanks for helping out:)

As the kind people above have stated theres a nice limitation on fat formatted usb sticks of 4 gig,so either format it to ntfs or exfat
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955704
Or make the file smaller that 4 GB or maybe split it

Thank you, but I think that exfat only is supported for Windows. I need a format that will enable me to move files from my mac to a USB, and then move those files to a Windows computer.

Is NTFS compatible with mac OS X?

I tried to reformat the USB to both exfat and NTFS.
Neither is excepted by OS X.
Any other formats availabe that could work for both windows and mac? If not how can I split this file to smaller pieces in OS X?

Never used mac sorry, you need to spend a little time on mr google looking for mkv splitter programs so you can make the file a little bit smaller to serve your purpose.

... or maybe split it
You make a good point.
Just use winrar, set it to storage mode (no compression so it's very fast), and make it split volumes at a size smaller than 4GiB and you're good.

Wow, thanks a lot! Finally a solution to this, been frustrating a long time. NTFS does not work for mac but this ntfs-3g does.
Downside is that it took much longer time to do the transfer to the USB than with the Fat32.

Winrar is not supported for mac. But I'm sure if I google there will be some mkv splitter for mac also.

Thank you all for help!:)

http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm

They have winrar for mac on the RarLab website though I have no need to use it myself and its commandline only. If you split and create tar.gz files into 3.8gig pieces, you can go back to using fat32 and Windows winrar will open the tar.gz files. Winrar is not free and after the trial they tell you to pay or uninstall it but you don't have to, it will still work but bug you about it.

u can't load single file larger than 4GB to any disk drive which isn't formatted as NTFS

u might split the files using winrar as they suggested or u might use the local area network to transfer the file directly .. don't u have a crossover cable !

if u don't buy one and connect ur pc directly to ur wife's pc using this cable and u'll have a network in which u can transfer the file directly without any need to any flash memory ..

Yes, I have had this problem. It seems that your USB device is not formatted to allow copying of larger than 4gb files.
Easy fix though.

Find that USB device in a windows explorer window.
Right click it.
Click on format.
Choose NTFS.
Done.
