Contrary to the misguided beliefs of the very industries it sucks the commerce out of, downloading media from the internet cannot be stopped no matter what anyone tries. With the RIAA in hot pursuit of LimeWire, now it seems torrent sites – which are, if not direct perpetrators of piracy, at least its essential zipline – are being aggressively targeted for forcible take-down by the industry and its watch-dogs.

The Pirate Bay is arguably the best known of the lot, and despite being inundated with threats, police raids, civil actions, ISP-ordered sanctions and even the sentencing of its Swedish admins, continues to operate – even allegedly turning a modest profit in the process. Similarly, Usenet indexer Newzbin has returned to the same URL after a brief take-down, with dozens of new movie listings added every day. Its owners, for their part, have reportedly invested US$40,000 in its operation, and have even boasted about their plans to profit from it.

The media watch-dog groups tasked with solving this contentious problem are turning to two courses of action, neither of which offer any concrete solution. They either a) follow The Hurt Locker example, or b) expend their resources on lobbying the government for harsher penalties in regards to piracy. The first option is financially unenviable as the law firms involved often demand a hefty cut of the settlements (alleged to be 70% in the case of The Hurt Locker), and the latter risks public outrage as the issue of free speech rears its inflammatory head.

the answer is simple! make a better product and people will be more compelled to support it right & proper. Availability of files broadened my musical horizons and led to purchases of artists and genres that would probably still be strangers to me. :fst:
