I have windows xp installed and I want to install redhat linux 9 as a second operating system. Is all I have to do is restart my computer put in the redhat cd and install it then ill be able to boot from either windows or linux at startup?

Thats correct. Just make sure your CD-ROM is set 1st in the boot order.

I heard there were other steps to get the boot option where you can boot from windows or linux.


And when your installing linux does it give you the option to create another partition for linux to install on?

Partition first. Put linux at the end of the drive, about 10 gig should be enough. The rest is common sense or automatic. Bootloader = yes - automatic install.

Make it the last partiton on the drive so it doesn't conflict with XP. You can have many partitions before it if you like.

If The drive is 80gb (75 useable), then XP= maybe 20gig, then partition 2= 20gig, partition 3= 25gig, partition 4 (linux)= 10gig total. (Approximate numbers)
This last partiton will actually be three separate partitions created by the linux installation, the swap in the middle of it, between the system partition and the user partition.
Keeping all this at the end will keep XP fom trying to mess with linux or linux from messing with XP.

Ok I think I understand what your saying. Right now I only have 1 partition,and it has xp installed on it. So now I get partition magic and make another partition 10gb big or so. But what file system should I use? Is ntfs ok to use with redhat 9?

It doesn't matter. You can even leave it raw. Linux will reformat it own partitions.
Just choose the correct partition and use automatic allotment or whatever it's called when you install.

My linux freezes at finding module dependencies.... Anyone know what's wrong?

Did you use md5 checksum? Maybe corrupt media or wrong selections?

Ok I installed redhat 9 and I wanted to know if I could install kazza lite or msn messenger or anything like that on it.

K-lite can be installed via WINE see the K-Lite Homepage (http://doa2.host.sk)

as for msn messenger do a search in google there is one. Its called amsn but i havent tried it yet.

forget about kazaa on linux it is rubbish.

i would look into using bittorrent just download the tarball and make sure you have the dependencies installed (python is one) and your good to go no need to install anything.
