Does those two processors have the same performances ?

AMD Athlon xp 2400 (2Ghz)

Intel Pentium 4 (2Ghz)

amd doesnt care bout clock speed the numbers simply mean it performs as much as good or close to a p4 2.4ghz

Really?!!

I would rather have thought that the pentium 4 was more performant than the AmD Athlon Xp when both have similar frequency.

nono amds are better performing but more power hungry

pentuims are less power hungy but less performace, thats why
alot of laptops have p4's

So I guess it's harder to cool a amd than a pentium ?

I ask that because noise is a very important issue for me.

Will it make a really noticable diiference?

The AMD traditionally run hotter, but the fans that come with either of them will probably be about the same in Db output.

But the main comparison factor in my mind is,

Description: Pentium 4 (2.4GHz, 512KB, 533MHz, Soc) $160.00
Athlon XP 2400+ (2.0GHz, 384 KB, 266MHz, Socket A) $78.00

82 Dollars, for nearly the same performance. <_<

Yes, but I won't buy a "Box" version anyway, I will put my own silent fans and heatsink.

So how more noisy do you think the AMD Athlon XP 2400+ (2.0GHz) is going to be compared to the Pentium 4 (2.4GHz)?

Cos if it's like twice noisy, I think I choose the pentium.

I dont quite understand, the CPU's themselves dont make noise, just the Fans......

If you are buying your own silent fans, then they will sound the same, with similar fans running at similar Dbs.

Spend the extra few dollars to get the 'boxed' unit. You get a much better warranty that way. Also for the price difference it's well worth it to have an extra cooler.

Agreed, I believe when I bought my 2500, to get it OEM, instead of with a HS and Fan, it was 3 dollars less, ;)

3 bucks for a 2800RPM fan at the very least! hah! Good deal if I do say so myself.

BTW: I think the fan is 3200 RPM, I froget what sensor my MBM is reading for my Fan 1

I mean if the AMD gets hotter than the Pentium, then I'll have to cool it more, increasing my fans's speed, so it will make more noise. And as I said noise is a very important issue for me.

If you plan on plugging your HSF into the motherboard it's probably going to run at max speed anyway.
Zalman makes some nice quiet fans for heatsinks and Virtualbody has fabricated a cool fan adaptor for his heatsinks ( and half of Canada too, apparently).

I don't think that there is a discernable difference in the amount of noise you will have to generate with either brand of CPU.

Ok thanks!

I'll go for a Athlon XP 2600 then.

BTW what is the best betwen those 3 Athlon XP 2600 models?: ( They're all the same price)

XP 2600 (2133 Mghz)
XP 2600 FSB 333 (2083 Mghz)
XP 2600 Barton (1917 Mgz)

Either of the two with the 333MHz FSB (the barton has 333MHZ FSB). One Athlon 2600 has a 266MHz FSB, but that ones crap and its probably hard to find now, I think either of the 333MHz ones is fine, afaik the differences are pretty negligible. (i think ones a little bit better for overclocking, so if you think your gonna try that then maybe you should check into that).

Dude. Didn't he just say that a quiet computer is very important? Overclocking would require more cooling and noise.

@leonidas get the Athlon XP 2500+ (Barton core).

I will :)
Thanks a lot dudes.

Mate if you're updating form an older cpu tri and get the ram to match too.It keeps it running more stable and you wont get the full performance of the cpu .I just killed my cpu, mobo(i liked it tooA7N8X)last weekNo worries thou i just bought a new amd'soltek board yesterday. :D

this is probably a retarded (and unrelated) question but should i choose amd athlon 2500+ (1.87ghz) or an intel celeron (2.4ghz) ;)

Athlon 2500+ - Celerons are light-weight processors and can't compare with Athlons or Pentiums
