Newbie Questions

Forgive the redundancy here. I would like to download the latest version of my vehicle's gps dvd but have never attempted to do anything like this. In what reading I have done, it seems that the more seeds a file has the more stable it is. Can anyone share exactly which software and hardware I will need to make a copy as well as how to determine which files are in fact the best to download. In particular I would like to upgrade my Toyota Gen 2/3 gps to its latest version which is 9.1
