I have a 15MBit connection ( actually can go up to 22MBits on occasion)

I am new to Newsgroups ; switched from torrents because of security concerns :

i have tried 2 newsgroup providers :

1. UseNetServer 2. NewsDemon

with usenetserver my speeds were under 2.5 Mbits
with Newsdemon I firstly received 3.3 Mbits now average under 2.5 Mbits

Giganews is out of my budget range.

with a 15 Mbit connection what should my speeds be ?

Thanks to all who take the time to reply :>)

Astraweb (http://www.news.astraweb.com/specials/kleverig-11.html) obviously, but you should be getting full speed even with those providers. Who is your ISP? Are you sure they aren't throttling your traffic?

eta; I see you've got NewsRover as your client. Have you tried others? What settings are you using?

i have tried multiple clients ended up buying Newsbin Pro wish i'd saved my money as
nntpgrab was the most easy to use. Use SSL servers.
ISP is Shaw Cable (calgary Alberta Canada) supposedly does not traffic control DL only UL.

1) How many connections do you have set in the server settings?
Try increasing them to 10

2) Since your client is newsbin check it out

First of all, make sure you are not confusing megabits with megabytes. (notice any/lack of capital letters) I suspect that is the situation.

1 megabyte = 8 megabits

...therefore ...

2.5 megabytes = 20 megabits

So your speed seems just about right!

Also, be aware that Newsdemon and UsenetServer use the same back-end servers - owned by Highwinds - so retention and completion should be the same. NewsDemon has always advertised an extra week of retention compared to other Highwinds providers/resellers, but that is a lie: the retention is identical.

For a low-price unlimited SSL account, I suggest Astraweb or UsenetNow since they have over 100 more days of retention than Newsdemon and Usenetserver. These are the specials:
