been using Astraweb with SSL for some time, but recently set up MyNZB on the iphone so I can do downloads remotely

however, MyNZB doesn't support SSL so am currently using the normal eu server

how risky is this? does it mean that my Internet Provider can see what I'm downloading, but no-one else?

I could use a vpn with a US IP address, but can only get 20 Meg that way from my 50 Meg line

SSL is a safety net which I did not use with Giganews. Being a somewhat sporadic user of usenet when I discovered the Astraweb block accounts I htought I would give that a go and as SSL is free then I use it. Without it your ISP can see what you are downloading, with it they can only see that you connected to Astraweb and can see the download states but no details of the downloads (I think!). It seems sensible to use it as it is free. Would you really notice any difference between 20 meg and 50 meg in terms of actual useability? I mean in practical terms does it make a difference to when you watch a (non-copyrighted!) movie if it took 5 minutes or 50 minutes to download.

As for me I do not have the option as my line maxes out between 1 - 1.5 meg due to the distance I live from the phone exchange.

That's a frequently discussed topic here.

Here's one from a week ago.

MyNZB doesn't support SSLlol, it's a frontend for Sab.

I realise that - I have it set up with Sab

and sab supports ssl...

yes, I realise that as well

I've been using SAB with SSL for some time.

but when I set up MyNZB, it didn't work with ssl activated

so I turned SSL off and then MyNZB started working

maybe I'm doing something else wrong - will give it another go tonight

Q: how important is SSL?
A: how important is your privacy for you?

BTW; Vpn does not limits your connection speed that much, your provider sucks!

re. vpn speed, yes, I thought 20Meg on a 50 Meg line was rubbish, but I'm using Strongvpn who I believe are quite a large company, and they spent about half an hour moving me around different US servers (I'm in UK), but 20Meg was the quickest I could get.

Perhaps I should try an EU company

anyway, looks like my cockup - rejigged settings on SAB & My MZB, and it's now working fine with SSL

thanks all for input

i don't understand why you would need ssl unless you are download some fbi classified content or something. It's downloading from public trackers that are the problem and even then it's rare.
