Right, so, I once used to use NZB's here, using Grabit, but it was simple, don't quite know how it worked, I didn't need to pay or anything, I had a server, user and pass that was passed on to me, but it stopped working a while ago.. Am trying to get back into using newsgroups.

Thing is, I need a simple step by step guide on how to do it (guides here didn't help me too much).

Is there a free way of using newsgroups, or am I going to need to pay?
If there is a free way (that will give me the same speeds as BT), where do I start? What's this IPv6 thingy I've seen here and there..? How do I use it..?

Any help much appreciated :)

There is a free server:
http://just4today.net/

The login data changes every day and you won't get the same speeds and retention as with paid services, but the former are relatively good - got ~250kB/s myself.

Free server? www.just4today.net, has 10 days retention and the username/pass changes on a daily basis. I was lucky to get 250-300K/sec with the 2 connectons they offered. But hey, its free.

Try www.just4today.net . It's good for 250 easy.

But like everything in life, the best, the fastest, the longest retention always costs money. It hasn't got to cost a lot, but it WILL cost, if you want binaries, with many hundreds of days retention, lots of connections so you can max out your speed and unlimited downloads

Once you start getting the taste of usenet, you will need to get a paid server for 10 - 15 USD per month.

Or as low as $8/mo if you pay for six months at a time with usenetnow: https://billing.usenetnow.net/signup.php?price_group=-3

is it possible to max out a 50mbit line with just4today.net?

No way. I would see 400K/sec for a few moments but that was rare. Most times it was between 250-350K on average. And really, it isnt that much for a paid subscription to max out your line. Use the deal that I posted earlier or Astraweb for $11/mo: http://www.news.astraweb.com/specials/kleverig-11.html

SABnzbd? I've been using it for about 6months now. Takes some getting used to if you're used to the traditional client.

Been using this for some time now and absolutely satisfied with it, considering I was an absolute usenet-n00b till very recently.

Grabit is probably OK for a beginner who just wants to try out a free usenet server. Although Grabit is outdated and buggy (and hard on had disks IMO), it's free, easy to learn, and gets the job done.

Unzbin and Newsflash Plus might be better choices in a free client for a beginner. Sabnzbd is great but it's not very intuitive for most people who aren't used to dealing with web/browser applications.

Usenet Explorer is the most sophisticated in a good sense client over there with lots "lots" of features.. But it is not for i-love-only-nzb pussies. :D

That Wikipedia page is bullshit. Some asshole admins at Wikipedia have deleted the pages for a lot of news clients. Compare that page to an old version:

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Comparison_of_Usenet_newsreaders&oldid=145495669

Notice all the titles in red. Those clients are not in the current page. Most were once complete articles and are now gone. Alt.binz was deleted. Binary News Reaper, Ninan, Newsreactor, and many other binary clients have been deleted. Yeah, I'm pissed off because I worked on a lot of them, only to have the newsreader pages labeled "not notable" and deleted by some ignorant staff menber (or maybe someone who works a day job in the record or movie industry?). This is why I stopped wasting my time with Wikipedia long ago.

.......... But back to the original question. There ae many tutorials available for Grabit, as it's been around so long.

tbh the features it compares only scrape the surface. RSS? scheduling? backup/optional servers? CPU/memory/HD load? Sorting? Dupe handling? etc etc.
