There's probably more 56k users here than you'd think...

...and you're lucky getting 5k. I hardly ever get better than 4.5k peak and 3.6k average, due to my crappy old phonelines.

If you want faster data transfer, splash out and get adsl or cable.

^^^^if your rich.
I'm on 56k, and mine speeds are mostly 6kb/s. Believe me or not. I unplug all my other phone lines when im online. I don't know if this is helping or not...but something is.

YOU SUCK: True... adsl ain't cheap if you live downunder. *shakes fist @ Telstra*

I already tried disconnecting our other phoneline, but it made no difference.
It's not the line inside my house, it's the shoddy old cabling they have on the street that slows my connection down. <_<

there is nothing you can realy do to raise your speed on klite with 56k, and 5 to 8 kb are what your download speed is suppose to be anyways

What does it say on the connection icon in the system tray for you connection speed?

Even when I had dialup, I would only connect at 40,000 bps, sometimes 42,666 bps, one day even 44,000 bps. (!)

If you are getting lower than this a possible option is to get in touch with your telephone company and get them to increase the volume on your line, this might give you a stronger connection, but even so you won't be able to get downloads any faster than about 7k.

When I was on 56k I always connected at 46, every time...

Far out. I've never had a pop greater than 4.3kb/s, and even that glory never outlasts a minute or two. I'm usually around 3kb/s with good sources. Could it have anything to do with living in a block of 40yr old flats? (I connect at a solid 40.0kbps)

I remember when my Dad was on AOL dialup, it would never connect at over 33,000bps and it was really slow, about 2.5kb per second.

Luckily we both have cable on our computers now.

When downloading songs on my DSL, I get speeds of like 150-250 kb/s. But im on a router which I think slows my speed down a lot.

one thing to remember about dialups. especially aohell users. that connection rate that it shows you when it connects? that is JUST WHEN IT CONNECTS. Your actual bitrates will fluctuate, while you are online. Maybe a little, maybe a lot, but they dont hardly ever stay at the same speed as when you connected to the ISP server.
6-7 on a dialup? I'd be damn proud of that, if it was me :)

My buddy living out in the stix, he gets a conn of 15. not 22, not 30, not 40+...15. gaming with him online was like watching a turtle move, and I was on 56k at the time too!

I just wanted to add this lil comment- ya know that 5x faster stuff that earthlink promotes with their dialup access? It will Not help you with downloads and KL. Basically all that software does it help to filter out adds and shit that loads up inside of website pages. It's a surfing tool, not a downloading tool

There is a way to double your DL speed with 56k Modem!

Well, you really need 2. 56k Modems and set a few things under XP, so it will bundle both connections and treat them like one single connection. Only problem is that you need to dial-up both 56k modems every time but you will get like 10 KB/sec downloads! Maximum transmision speed of 1. 56k modem is 7.075 KB/sec, so with both modems working your maximum could be 14.15 KB/sec.

I tried it in my area with my old EarthLink account and they don't seem to care (or know) if I was logged on with the same username and password twice! Anway, I got 1.5 Mbps DSL know and don't really care about that little trick anymore.

Download "BeFaster" from Ekremdeniz.com (http://befaster.ekremdeniz.com) it'll change some values in your systems setup. Not much of a speed up but still worth trying.

Before when I had 56k, I had speeds of 10kb/s, without any extra crap and other stuff.

There's one eensy weensy little thing that MadDog-2000 forgot to mention.....

For this super duper tip to work, there's a small matter of needing two seperate phonelines, not a splitter mind, two numbers.

As was suggested, the only thing you can do is ask your telecom company to turn up the gain on your line. This probably won't help though, and may even deteriorate the quality of your voice calls.
You're stuck with a crap connection i'm afraid mate. If there was some magic trick, everyone would be using it.

Like LTJ said u need 2 phone lines with 2 numbers...also the area you live in must support modem-linking...meaning that both youre lines must be able to accept that speed...I live in Thailand and I cant do this even with 2 separate phone lines simply becaus the phone lines in my area do not support that speed, which is y im stuck with single dial-up (dsl, cable, isdn - not even an option)...i know that sounds gay but you might wanna check and see if you can even do this before going out and getting another phone number...

Yeah, I'm still living in the stone age too, I usually get about 5 or 6 kb/s. We are also poor and live out in the middle of no were's land.
