i get a big prob with my mac, it keeps system halted when i surf the website, but my norton does nothing to this, so i am considering to change for a new antivirus.
i find 1 year BitDefender antivirus 2010 (1-user)[/URL] for Free in V3 Software Store, but i have never used this, is it reliable??

If it's reliability and effectiveness you need try Avast, used it for years and never had a problem.

Get something from cnet downloads, they are all clean.

Avast is pretty good as I remeber, but haven't used it for few years.

I stopped using Avg a few years ago when it insisted that all my keygens had trojans when it had scanned them as clean just before the new virus updates. The crazy thing was is every new update targeted a new makers keygens like NEO and then BRD and so on. It was obvious someone there got a hair up their A and decided no one should have keygens. Avira was really nice but it conflicted with another app I use "BCWipe". Everytime I would wipe a file BCWipe created a dummy file (ABCDEFGHI etc.) and Avira would stop the wiping process several times saying it was a virus, and I had to hit IGNORE each time, it became quite annoying. Avast is OK too but I also had issues with it.

If you would like to try Bitdefender free (it has no realtime scanner you have to run it manually) just google "bitdefender 10 free".

But what I would recommend to you is to make a folder on your hard drive called "Free Anti-Virus" and download Avg, Avast Antivir and Bitdefender 10 free and put them in the folder and try them one at a time to see which you like best (make sure you uninstall one before adding another, some of them have uninstallers on their site because they do not go away easily). Just download them from the makers site to be sure your getting a good copy. Most sites hide their free versions, they want you to buy. So, Google their names with free added to find them quickly (Avg free).

I'd have to agree with Jackywky, MSE is a great Antivirus suite. But since he said he was using a MAC I don't think that one is an option :)

Don't use avg , it's bloatware and slows down your pc . Use mse (microsoft security essentials) which is as light as nod 32 and effective .

i have to say go with Avast too , and stay away from fucking norton , it slows down your computer when doing nothing , seriously . the computers i did diagnostics on they had norton , as soon as i uninstalled it i could see a spike in performance . you also might want to try mcafee stinger standalone

you also might want to try mcafee stinger standalone

I'm really sorry for crashing the thread but I have just one question. Is stinger a capable primary antivirus now? I used to use it in 2007 and though it held definitions for only 50 viruses, worked like magic.

AVG isn't all good. I used it for 3 months before it started coming down with all sorts of problems. Switched to AVAST Free. Never looked back.

I use to use and pay for ESET NOD32, but when I reinstalled my machine and went with Windows 7, it brought my machine to its knees, I have no idea why, I went through support and everything. So then I started to look for alternatives and found Avast and it free, cannot beat it, plus i read some of the reports and it has pretty good detection for a free program, and does not slow my machine down at all.

I would suggest rising antivirus.
Its free and light..have had no problems running it on my Vista.

AVG has long been demoted to being a poor antivirus solution. Avast, Avira, and MSE are ones that I know are good at the moment. Personally, I've been using Avira Antivir on all 3 computers in my home, and it has picked up on something before when we had a guest browsing on one of them. Other than that, they all stay clean.

Kapersky supposedly has the highest detection rates, but be prepared for your machine to come to a grinding halt with resources.

I'm using Avira Antivir personal. It is free and does not use a lot of resources. Updates are also free. So if you have an outdated machine then Avira would be a good choice in my opinion. For more powerful PC i would recommend ESET.

Linux is not good for most users cause some programs don't work on it.
As of free AVs, I would recommend avast! It uses minimum resources and it's easy to handle.

I've always used Norton for as long as I can remember but I kind of had a feeling that it has "hidden agendas," like downloading stuff that I'm not aware of. A friend of mine recommended Avast, so I downloaded it for free. I'm actually pretty happy with it because it's efficient, effective, updates itself in a timely manner. I've been using it for a year now.

I used to use Avira AntiVir Personal + Comodo Firewall + SUPERAntiSpyware.
They are all free and quite effective. You can use Malwarebytes over SUPERAntiSpyware, I suppose it doesn't really matter.

I just use ESET Smart Security now. Simple and effective, although it isn't free.

I've used AVG for years. It started out small but seems rather bloated now with the 2011 edition. I think I'll give MSE a shot.

I used to have Eset installed, but lately i changed to Comodo which i've heard very good things about.
Till now it's looking good and is pretty light on the resources as well.
If you haven't tried it before give it a shot it's free.

You can Google for it. I don't think it is actually bundled but it is available for XP and above...I have been very pleased with it since I got tired of the workarounds and such with ESET. Like ESET it leaves a small footprint on your computer and its resources. Along with being effective it is free! Unless you are a hardcore anti-Microsoft person you really can't go wrong

AVG has been my favorite for years. But I just can't get along with that new version, and it wouldn't let me do things I could do before, like certain settings that are now being dictated. I'm seriously thinking of changing to Kapersky now

i use avg free from a lot of time and i never have problem... for me the best thing is having a good firewall first of all.. and then you can pay attention to what is just on your pc.. most of the time you can be the best antivirus, for example if you find crack.exe resovlvealltheproblem.exe ecc ecc don't open them at all ;)
