Upgrading from WD Live Box

Hi, anyone out there who had a WD Live box and/or found a better upgrade that plays more formats such as quicktime, with HDMI, cleaner navigation and has less compatibility issues with DTS audio in particular. Willing to listen to any recommendations but no audio with certain mkv files is the biggest issue.

I am waiting for the Boxee Box to come out in November. It looks really promising.

I think there are some apps for getting Torrents and files from Usenet from NZB's. I have been waiting for something like this for awhile now. Hopefully this November, it lives up to the hype.

The WD Live with the B-RAD (b-rad.cc) firmware that i'm rocking handles bittorrent, webserver, NZB, SSH, FTP, etc just doesn't play friendly with everything. Going to checkout PopcornHour or a substitute player for November is a long way off.

i have wdtv live with the b-rad and i am thinking abt the new plus version which plays netflix. There isint much competition to wdtv live when it comes to playing media from usb/network shares. u either have roku, apple tv et.c which is entirely online streaming or small atom/ion boxes which u have to set everything up including the remote.

WDTV Live already has hdmi and hardly anything is ever released in QuickTime specific format. Only my digicam captures movies in .mov format which i am unfortunately unable to play on the wdtv.

i do also have the audio issue from time to time. most 98% of the time evrything plays. u can try this solution for fixing some of the mkv files

I also am a HUGE proponent of the WDTV Live with the B-rad firmwares. I have an older computer setup as a server running Freenas. It's BY FAR the best option out there and I have tried them ALL at one point or another. What the hell are you downloading in quicktime anyway?? You'd prob be better off converting the QT files then having to cater to them.

I've looked at the WDLive machines several times; they just don't offer much for me. Have you considered an all in one solution? I built a tiny machine for my living room and I love it. Did the entire thing for around $350.

I have a WDTV Live and have had little issues with audio. There have been times when I had an MKV that had the subtitle listed above the audio (in mkvmergegui) and it would not play. There is also an issue with MKV's made with MKV Toolnix 4.2, that the author initiated some sort of compression that the WDTV Live cannot handle, and he says he will not fix it, its WD's problem. But the people on the forum there say to just re-mux them with the 4.0 version or to use the 4.2 version for remuxing to get the audio back you have to go into the extra options tab and set the compression to none for all files it can be set to like the video audio and subs. I switched to using the 4.0 version for editing MKV's that sometimes have Russian audio or another as the default, and I just get rid of them alltogether and set the english to "default track flag" YES. You can also set the subtitle flag to forced subs (forced track flag) so it will show subs only when they speak another language just like you see in the theater. That way you don't have to activate English subs all the way thru the video to see when they speak pig latin.
