Since I'm not alone in the belief that The Haunting in Connecticut is far from being good http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0492044/ how to answer?

Look at the recommendations at the bottom of that page at IMDB .If you are looking for other demonic "possession " films then although there have been a lot lately ( Exorcism of Emily Rose,The Uninvited ,The Unborn )but nothing still beats the original The Exorcist. If you want haunted houses then The Shining or The Haunting or the original Japanese version of Dark Water.

For general horror movies I always thought the original Halloween was hard to beat or Prince of Darkness is really unsettling or for something more thought inducing, Stir of Echoes .

There's a little difference between horror and terror.
For horror I loved the Saw sequence and Cube, and for terror I loved The Shining and The Ring.

Paranormal Activity put the bloody willies up me!
Less is definitely more when suspense is the driving force. Knowing something is going to happen in that film (like with the durr-duh durr-duh in Jaws) just made me more tense.
Not sure I could watch no.2 as the ad shows a toddler and kids coming to harm always kinda mentally freaks me out.
Though having said that, the ending of Stephen King's The Mist was as perfect as it was disturbing.

For slashers and making you jump, I agree that the original Halloween is hard to beat.

Took the time to prioritize them. Enjoy. If you can get through these without flinching then you truly are made of steel.

1. Silence of the Lambs
2. Hannibal
3. Red Dragon
4. Hannibal Rising
5. 1408 starring John Cusack based on Stephen King novel
6. The Mist based on another Stephen King Novel
7. The Chair
8. The Ring
9. Child's Play
10. Saw movies (have to watch these in order or you won't get it)

All of the Saw movies, of course, as everyone else said.

Hostel -- I could see where something like this might actually happen to an American tourist.

Joy Ride -- very believable story. I go on a lot of road trips and after watching this movie I'm very careful not to piss off truckers.

Final Destination -- The first one was very well done.

Wrong Turn -- Eliza Dushku was in this movie and it was scary. Do I need to say any more?

Jeepers Creepers-- I love this one because it does NOT have the typical happy ending one would expect.

Jeepers Creepers-- I love this one because it does NOT have the typical happy ending one would expect.
As opposed to the other movies that you listed and basically every horror movie produced in the last twenty years where there isn't a big surprise twist right at the end and the villain really dies and all involved ride off into the sunset to live happily ever after.
As I said elsewhere the predictability of the 'shocks" at the end of recent horror movies undermines any real emotional response they might otherwise have elicited.
"Geez oh noes he was bitten/survived / laid one final trap or wasn't the last of them and we didn't know it"
Actually I'd be shocked it good triumphed for once .

Whenever these topics come up I always gotta recommend The Cell. The dream sequences are pretty disturbing(at least to me they were).

Anyways, I just saw Paranormal Activity 2 in the theater a couple nights ago. It was actually pretty good, I thought it was going to be terrible. One of my favorite tv series is Ghost Adventures, so I really dig the paranormal stuff. But I was a little lost in the story since I still haven't seen the first one. Guess that should be first on my list to watch next.

I'd attempt to be nice to you and comment on your post about how "Drag Me to Hell " like Raimi's Evil Dead series isn't even really horror but it's obvious that you are only a member of this site for what you hope to get from it so I won't bother wasting my breath.

Disturbing Behavior
Grindhouse (Planet Terror and Death Proof)

Honestly there are next to no decent horror movies which will scare an average adult shitless ... or maybe I have a strong stomach?

The Human Centipede was an excellent concept.

At work somebody didn't clean the kitchen for ages and there was a yellow like substance forming, exactly like that infection on the end persons face.

Glad I have a strong stomach, felt something coming up ;).

This is what I love about a good Thriller/Horror film, where you get reminded of scenes in practical life and feel the same disgust as you felt in the film.

Today I read that it could well be possible for a human centipede to actually exist (Source: Ask A Fat Guy (http://askafatguy.net/2010/06/03/is-a-human-centipede-possible/)). Although the author wasn't a surgeon or doctor it's still a very chilling concept.

I'm pretty sure I won't be visiting Germany or even The Netherlands (Hostel) for a while now :w00t:

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
The Exorcist (1973)
The Fourth Kind (2009)
Halloween (1978)
Hellraiser (1987)
The Shining (1980)
Night of the Living Dead (1968) Old but still a classic.
The Omen (1976)
Alien (1979)
Aliens (1986)
Christine (1983)
Children of the Corn (1984)
The Dead Zone (1983)
Evil Dead (1981)
Evil Dead 2 (1987)
Poltergeist (1982)

Meh, those are ones I could think of off the top of my head that are good. Take it, most of those are older flicks and might not be have the gore and bloodshed gratuitously done like modern Horror/Slasher but they are good nonetheless.

Actually if you think about it the constructed death scenes were sort of a precursor to a lot of the stuff that is commonplace in horror movies nowadays.

I don't know if it was intentional but there's even a scene in Hot Fuzz that sort of mimics Father Brennan's death as well.
