My wife finally consented to two PCs (hurray), but I first broached the subject with her long enough ago that I'm sure what was the solution is no longer.

I just Googled this...

http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/use-one-keyboard-and-one-mouse-for-multiple-computers-pc-only/

...looks okay, but, famous last words, etc.

What's the way to go?

I use a kvm switch and it works great

kvm is nice, useful, simple, reliable.
input director have extras, but its more likely to fail than a kvm.

Give us some details about what you are using computers for

One is my wife's personal PC, the other is our dedicated business PC.

The easiest way to solve this is to use a wireless keyboard and mouse, and to just plug the dongle-receiver into the front of the pc. When you want to control the other pc, just move the dongle over, and get going!

That is actually a splendid idea.

Wonder about the durability of the USB plugs...

Actually, a fellow ought to be able to buy a "switch-pitch" mouse/keyboard combo with two transmitters for just such a situation.

Assuming you have two monitors I would use Synergy (http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/). I use it at work and it works wonderfully.
