some of the other brands of drives may be pretty good, but the Pioneer is great if you want to save money by buying off-brand/generic DVD-R discs. a lot of drives have problems with generic discs, but the Pioneer burns 'em like a champ.

A new one was released, by Pioneer I think, which costs ~£145, writes DVD+/-R to 4x, DVD+RW at 2.4x, DVD-RW at 2x and DVD-RAM at 3x. I'd recommend this one.

the 106/A06 fits that description, except it doesn't use DVD-Ram.

the next Pioneer model will be the 107/A07, which will have these write speeds--

DVD-R: 8x (Z-CLV), 6x, 4x, 2x, 1x (CLV)
DVD-RW: 4x, 2x, 1x (CLV)
DVD+R: 8x (Z-CLV), 6x, 4x, 2.4x (CLV)
DVD+RW: 4x, 2.4x (CLV)
CD-R: 24x (Z-CLV), 16x, 8x, 4x (CLV)
CD-RW: 24x (Z-CLV), 16x, 10x, 4x (CLV)

The LG GSA-4040B does all that and DVD Ram.

Also has very competitive price.

Tomshardware recommends both the LG GSA-4040B and the Pioneer DVR-A06.
