Im buying a new AMD AthlonXP 2500+! :D . I getting the OEM version so it is not coming with a heatsink or fan. I need to know what the best heatsink is because im planning on overclocking. I looked at a Thermaltake Volcano 7+ and I think that is what im going to get!

I wanted to know yalls suggestions about the best heatsinks?

why not buy the retail one, they come with a far better warrenty and arent much more. is the rest of your system compatible with your cpu?

I have a volcanoe 9 and it works quite well on my overclocked XP2200+.My temps are usually uner 40.The volcanoe 7 isn't quite as good as the 9 but they are up to the volcanoe 11 by now and they are not very expensive.

I will say the same thing. Get the retail version. It has a much better warranty and a spare cooler for only a few dollars. You can then get a better cooler if you want.

no, i have to get another mobo and some diff. ram but i dont ahve the money now :( :( .

so i should get the retail version and then just buy another heatsink and dont use the one that comes with it?

why dont you just save up the money first then buy your system, saves lots of money :) . yeh get the retail version if its not to much more and you could try the heatsink that comes with it, probaly sh*t but could be ok, you can always buy another later!

I agree.

For under $5 you can buy a fan adapter and mount a 80mm fan on the stock AMD HS and probably get just as good results as the Volcano.

If you're serious about managing the heat and plan on OCing check out Peltier cooling or water cooling or (even better) a combination of both.

so what your are saying is that i just use the retail heatsink and add a fan to the top of it or something.

it would be nice but i dont think i can afford water cooling till after i get the cash flowing in <_< .

btw: nice post clocker about how you are building your pc
btww: im oly 15 and i get my license in 3 months so i can drive and then ill probably get a job and sit back and save up ;) :P ;) B) .

Like Virtual and others have said, Get the retail version.

Here's what I did, from newegg.com, I spent,

about 83 on some 512MB of Geil 3200 DDR-Ram (You get what you pay for, this
isnt the best for extreme limits overclocking of the barton.)

85 for the 2500 Barton Itself. (Cant complain on this one, look at my sig.)

and like 87 for my Epox 8RDA+, although I believe that is starting to get phased out, but its widely used, and has comparable features to the ASUS 120$ boards.

And as you can see in my sig, with stock cooling, and the 400Mhz ram, for my 333Mhz CPU  I can run it at about about 350Mhz over the stock speed, on stock cooling.

For fans in my case, I only have one in the bottom front, thats about 2100RPM, one in the back thats about 2500, and my CPU fan, which is about 2700 RPM.

Im happy with it, and im holding off on cooling purchases until I build my evaporative cooler in a few months.

I'll be interested to see what you think of that piece of hardware.

It appears to be a classic case of form over function. (http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=getarticle&articID=102)

Ahh well, if it sucks, I'll just try again, though the water cooling idea, is getting more and more towards the front of my cooling thoughts.

Will do,
I'm sure if I start, I'll be letting everyone know, Hey I've got a problem, my processor and Mobo just fried.

Nah, at least lets hope not, Though as you mentioned before the outside water cooling would be an idea, I saw an episode of the screensavers a while back, and Yoshi showed this Hugh outside radiator, that connects to the side of a case, so that would be cool, but I bet it's expensive, and it would cover up my paint job on my case, so after thinking about that no. but still a smaller outside kit would be cool. I'm going to have to go around all the modding sites and take a closer look

Opinion of a french user:

Product recommended: YES
Quite simply great!

For the installation it is useful to have access to Internet to go on the site of ¦Thermalright¦ or they explain you how to install it but not provided note…

About the temperatures, with my ¦P4C¦ ¦2.6GHz¦, I am with 33°C in ¦idle¦ mode with a 80mm ¦"Noiseblocker¦ ¦S2¦" fan at maximum speed
It is a little expensive but quality at a price. Moreover it is super good polished, a truth ¦ mirror¦, which facilitates heat exchange. It is provided with all that is necessary and even a syringe of thermal paste.

A product which I recommend largely!

I have installed one earlier model Thermalright SLK800U for someone else. It was a superbly made heatsink and very versatile to work with as you can put the fan of your choice. The heatsink quality was very good and I would have one too but I find them too expensive. :(

Here is a picture of that earlier model:

Sorry to get back on topic guys.

Copper is certainly the best conductor of heat (at least in terms of affordable metals), but as a radiator it is quite poor. The consequence can be that the whole of the heatsink gets hot, but dissipates only a little of that heat to the surrounding environment.

Aluminium on the other hand is not such a good conductor, but it is quite a good radiator. This, along with the weight, is why you see heatsinks which are a combination of a large copper base bonded to an aluminium 'radiator'.

My processor (XP2400+ thoroughbred) runs at a steady 33C, (35C under load) with a Cu/Al heatsink and 80mm fan, running at 1700rpm normal, 2000rpm under load. Mobo temp is usually about 2-3C below processor temp. I've no personal experience of the Thermalright heatsinks, so I can't give a meaningful comparison. But my HSF (http://www.cclcomputers.co.uk/specs/cooler/akasa/ak824cu-bl/spec.htm) cost a total of £13.57 compared to the Thermalright price of £37.60.

Well, what about it?

Have you done any research on this unit?
There are only about a thousand HSF combos out there, and new ones seemingly every day, I think it's somewhat unrealistic to think that we have experience with them all.
Did that piece get good reviews? If so, by whom, and could we see a link?

It does look interesting, what do you think?

Virtualbody1234
11-17-2003, 04:37 PM
It does look interesting. I would tend to be sceptical about it without some test results. It looks like weight could be a big problem.

I have tried to find some reviews but I don't find much clear data on it.

clocker
11-17-2003, 04:43 PM
Nor could I.

It weighs less than my HSF, but it appears to be cantilevered off the board quite a bit more, so it could be tricky to handle.

Another issue would be the fan placement, I think. It could be tough to align it so the fans are getting (relatively) cool air unless duct work was used.

Maybe leonidas will buy it and then report.
