What is the best anti virus software to get?
I am getting a new Dell laptop. I am spending about $1,400 on it and want to make sure it last and remains fast. I want to get a good anti virus software for it but don't want it to slow my computer down, but I do want it to fully protect my laptop from viruses and hackers. I am willing to pay money for it so whatever the best anti virus there is is what I want. I will have windows 7 professional on it as well.

NOD32 2.7 plus the infinite trial "fix". Reliable, very fast, and uses little resources. There may be a better choice, but I can only comment on what I've used. :)

I have used it. Pretty buggy if you ask me. It just stopped working for no reason = no protection.

I am now using Avast! Internet Security, very happy with it.

Microsoft Security Essentials has done a great job so far.All those other av i used only slowed down my pc with all the bloatware crap and didnt do a good job at detecting viruses ... only if they were keygens from games or cracks.

Nod32 + Tnod will be enough for now as it runs well even in low spec pc's plus with Tnod you wont need update license every now and then.
Bitdefender is good but only if you have 1+ Gb RAM same goes for Kaspersky.
AVG's detection system is good but its not performance based.

Used to use Avira before. Was okay but the false-positive notices really bugged me.
I've tried out Kaspersky - had 1 y/r genuine license. Really slowed down my computer but does a good job detecting malware.
NOD32 is quite good, low CPU usage, and easy to manage but it can get complicated with the newer editions. It also detects false-positives at times.

I'm now using Microsoft Security Essentials and I am happy with it. You don't have to deal with anything serious with MSE. Just be careful if you want to install it on a non-genuine edition of Windows.

does it protect against spyware/malware as well?

Are you using the free antivirus, the Premium one, or the security suite? I just checked the official Web site and the last two are supposed to protect you against spyware, while they don't say anything about the free one.

On a sidenote, I recall using AntiVir back inthe H+BEDV and free-av.com days. :)

Now that Norton (NIS) is back on top as one of the best suites I buy it with rebates and continue to upgrade to newer versions for free with the previous one. Mix it in with Malwarebytes for my antispyware needs.

norton also comes with complete security solution bundled in one software and when u r thinking of getting it through warez-bb why not to go for it rather then having more then one.......
tho my personnel recommendation wud be kaspersky, detect as much as 96% of malwares good GUI i only have 1 GB ram never had a problem with CPU usage or ram

I recently decided because of a promotion for a year free , to give AVG premium a try - had after much trial previously been using eset . Found it to be a horrible piece of software and subsequently, free or not ,premium or not, quickly removed it.
This break from eset gave me an opportunity to try out a few anti-viruses ( and firewalls -had been using outpost) again . This is my experience with a intel quad core computer with 8 gigs of ram .
G-data - slowed everything to a crawl ,didn't detect anything more and left traces that required a OP re-install to completely get rid of .
Kaspersky - newest one is buggy and also some slowdown .Doesn't leave any traces on removal though although a bit "intrusive" while running.
Bitdefender - decent and pretty thorough but extremely slow scan.
Panda - nice except for the false positives .
Aviria - The one I settled on .Light non- intrusive ,supposedly better detection rate than eset otherwise very similar .

Didn't try Norton from what i read it grabs your system and does like to let go so I didn't feel like buggering around if there happened to be a problem.
Basically I'd recommend simply by my own experience either eset or aviria with most people favoring eset for obvious reasons.

I use Kaspersky on my wifes cpu, she runs WinXP x64 and it works like a charm.. only drawback is the 'Sandbox' utility is not available in the XP x64 version. Thats not too much of a problem for her, as she doesn't visit sites that are potential for getting bad stuff, so I don't see myself needing the sandbox option on her cpu. On my cpu I run Vipre Anti-Virus and Firewall. I run Win7 x64 and it runs great on my system. Vipre isn't a well-known AV yet, but i'm very glad I went with them. :)

anon
12-23-2010, 12:45 AM
If she ever changes her mind regarding the sandbox, Sandboxie has a 64-bit version available. There's no crack for the latest version yet, but the only downside of finishing the trial period is a five second nag screen that appears the first time you run a program sandboxed. :)

And I hadn't heard of Vipre until you posted, I'll check some reviews out.

Anti virus programs are all limited in how much they can protect you. I like avast because its free and has no pop up. Avira is ok too but has nag screen.

I think going with Sandboxie and a free anti virus program is the way to go. Chrome has built in sandboxing but I hear there are still benefits to running it in sandboxie. Sandboxie exploits are rare fwir so you should be immune to most anything out there that comes through a web browser.

You can also look into whole system virtualization like returnil and get a clean desktop on every boot.

Its strong a efficent for sure, yet I find it nothing but hilarious that "Microsoft Security Essentials" exist. Instead of patching their OS, they make a separate security software, that is m$ allright. But its a legitimate strategy, keeping in mind that windows users are not even aware that viruses should be patched by OS manufacturer, not by norton, kaspersky or NOD.

NOD32 for sure but I switched to AVG afterwards. NOD is definately the best AV but there are some many options and setting that you must know how to configure right that I had to uninstall. AVG is not as good but it requires less maintenance.

Not entirely true because there are a couple real "dogs" out there and also several "good" ones that still give more false positives than you probably want to live with.
I've been using Avira lately after years of Nod - this after test driving almost everything else and all I have to say is that I am happy with the decision so far .
I also moved to Comodo firewall after long Agnitum Outpost loyalty ( again after testing most with a brief stop on Online Armor - which after a while started to adversely effect my system btw) and am likewise well pleased .

Went with MSE and got a warning that I had a Trojan. Looked and it was a program my brother wrote in assembler on xor encryption, when I was teaching him a long time ago. So if you got an update yesterday, it was because of that. Funny that it got flagged because the code was simple and straight forward really.

There are both free and paid antivirus in the market. For most of users, it’s not a necessity to deploy a premium antivirus on your home or personal computers. While in the case that you're running a business that requires an absolute safe environment, then a paid antivirus is a wise choice. check the lists of the best free and paid antivirus below:

I haven't used an antivirus or (outbound) firewall in forever, they aren't necessary if you have good security culture and practices. Of course, the average user doesn't.

The built-in stuff in Windows 8 and above seems good enough; when I have to reformat a computer with XP or 7 for a customer, I stick MSE on it (it still works and gets definition updates on XP if you use the POSReady registry tweak).

Not thus far, but I had a quick look at it recently and it seems very good, with options that even advanced users will find useful. A lot of people are using it on Windows XP, which has been mostly abandoned by regular security software.

The key is to be smart about what you are doing in the first place. The other thing is to hopefully get your virus definition database updated to protect against newest threats before you get it.

Windows has everything you need, don't install anything.

Defender is a great scanner and won't ruin your system, like third-party scanners do on the regular (or cause other problems, with Windows updates especially).

Plus, considering multiple of them have been caught collecting user data, I wouldn't trust those companies.

For a new Dell laptop with Windows 7 Professional, I recommend using a reputable antivirus solution like Bitdefender, Norton, or Kaspersky. These are known for effective protection without significant system slowdowns. Make sure to keep the antivirus software updated for the latest security features.

And where can you buy a new Dell laptop with Windows 7, which came out on 2009 and became unsupported four years ago?
