I would suggest starting with c++ and then moving onto java. You have quite some time in your hand right?

thats nothing :D You better not stop working if you want to grow as a programmer. No school should be able to stop the spirit of a programmer.
(wait it does to every once in a while, nevermind)

Is it an addictive activity?

In short, a programmer never stops programming. However, if one is looking for quick scripts here and there then should just download. but if one wants to be a programmer then it never stops. No matter how much programming you have done, you learn new thing everyday! Its as addictive as drugs to me :D (although havent tried drugs :unsure: )

Start with C. Even if you start with "C++" you'll never even learn the features of it that make it a "++". Java is great to learn but now isn't the time. A good foundation from the bottom up is the way to go. I started with C++ in high school although it was basically C. It makes java alot easier to learn.

you can find many compilers for c++, and many of them are free

my personal fav is borland c++builder personal (free) but you can get enterprise and crack it

c++builder enterprise (http://www.borland.com/products/downloads/download_cbuilder.html)

try all of the above

@I.am:
i found java extremely difficult after learning c++ because of some fundamental differences, such as primitive types and array handling

they were extremely similar though

Yup! Even I preferred and still prefer to some extent c++ over java. You get so much used to all concepts and handling through c++ that java looks like a crappy programming language. Although i program in java a lot but still like c++ for many things. Both are very powerful languages and most of the programs written are still in C++. But I must admit that java actually exhibits Object oriented programming concept. Everything is actually an object unlike in c++. Even the pointers in java are objects.

I tried learning c++ a few months ago, but the main problem i had with the whole idea is what can i do with it? I can create programmes, but to do what?
Can someone who knows what they're talking about plz explain the actual benefits of learning to programme, thanks, because i would love to learn it if i can make use of it.

well...
I am certainly not a motivational speaker telling people to learn how to program. We usually start with very basic programming all we do in school or teach ourselves. The actual programming you learn is when you see a need and design something for it. Forget about selling it but design something for which a need is there. You find it clumsy typing each of your url's you visit everyday then make a program click on which will do it for you and sign in your name/password. Do where you think you need a hand which saves time and gives you an edge.

When you are advanced enough, an idea would be enough for you to design something. You all start programming out of blue and realize later that what you made was beautiful. But before that lots of programming experience in required.
One language is not enough. I started with BASIC (Beginners All Purpose symbolic instructional code). The people who have done will laugh with me for doing it. It was certainly too basic but the concept of loops and other small things you get from there. Ofcourse who can forget infinite goto's :rolleyes: .
C,C++, Java,Assembly language, Cgi,perl,html all came along. You just need a start the whole learning experience never ends.

Hope you get started :)
