Let me quote myself, and can't stress enough: I HAVE NO PAID SUBSCRIPTION WHATSOEVER:
It can take some effort and some time but usenet can be free too.
This is a snapshot of my Sabnzbd Usenet-client that I use without any kind of paying subscription at all.

hmm well he's lucky but usenet isn't usually free.
hmm well he's lucky
No, he knows how to use the resources at his disposal, which is something else. If you search the forums, you'll find a lot of posts about free news services.

could you be so kind as to point out a few? ive looked numerous times and havent had any success. i must be missing something.
Just4Today for sure. There was also the IPv6 tunnel thingy, but I'm not sure that still works. If you search Google, you'll also find some:

You won't get the same perks as on paid services, but they work.

I suppose those "perks" include bandwidth/speed, right?.
Speed and retention, yes.

Just4Today is pretty fast for my 3Mbit line :)

Ipv6 is still working (xsnews stopped taking new applications for the ipv6-test, but newszilla6.xs4all.nl still works) ... just4today still works ...
Google is certainly your friend. As I mentioned before you have to do some effort but once you get it working it's well worth it.
Usenet-boards also contain usefull info. You will have to develop an interest in the Usenet and you will find out the 'free' methods in a short while.
I suppose those "perks" include bandwidth/speed, right?.
I have a retention of +500 days, unlimited traffic and my 30 mbit line always maxes out ... I'm pretty satisfied for € 0,00 a month

As I said ... try to read and learn about Usenet before using it ... you don't get many things in life without investing a minimum of effort and time.

If you can't be bothered to figure it out and do the research, then pay the ~$10 a month. If you can't afford that (or take the time to look for alternatives) then you should stick to torrents IMO.

its not that. every six months or so i decide to give usenet a try again. i search for free access and stuff because i dont want to pay, especially if i dont end up liking it. but i do look and the only free stuff i find is trials so i quit looking after about a week.
ive still been looking and ive got a few things figured out but nothing like what disme is talking about with 500+ retention. i just got a free indexer with just4today, whcih is ok, but the rentention is only like 10 days, and it takes longer than that to download a blu ray on this crappy connection.
