I remember when i started my quest to hear every song in the world (an endeavor that would turn out to be fruitless), i started listening to stuff i didn't understand, it was really hard to be interested because it just didn't sound good to me, until i found a few russian bands that i fell in love with (and tried to learn russian because of, i know some, not alot) and listened to even though at the time i couldn't understand.. i can't explain why one language sounded good to me and all the others didn't at all, but i was wondering what other people think of this.

Cant, English, greek or nothing.

Yes. There are some really fantastic songs out there regardless of the language spoken. I have read somewhere that not everyone hears music in the same way, some people are supposedly more connected to the lyrics while some fixate on the beat. Maybe the latter would be more open to music in a language different to their own.

If the beat or rhythm is nice, I would.
I listen to Chinese and Japanese music even though I don't understand them.

Yes. It also depends on how the beat is going to give you some funky movements. Not if it's kinda boring and not pleasing to the ears..

I only listen to the songs in the languages (Arabic/French,Turkish,Russian) which i cant understand, its probably for the love of the genre (Ethnic) but the quality of singing and style of delivering the words also matters. In Arabic where accent largely varies a lot from one country to another, I enjoy listening to some artists and some other not.

Half the songs that are supposed to be in English have indecipherable pronunciations.

To answer your question, I don't really care what language a song is sung in or what message, if any, it contains. As long as it doesn't contain foul language all that matters is the tune and the quality of the singer's voice.

Music is my drug and catalyst you can say :P. I listen to all kinds of music, no matter which language it is in. My favourites are japanese, traditional Chinese, Old Britian folk, Buddhist chants and native Tribal African Vocals. But, on an emotional level, I can only connect myself with the melodies of my mother tongue the best.

If it has a good beat I would defiantly listen to it if its in a language I don't know. I don't really care about the lyrics in songs. I have been listening to some rock en Español lately.

Yes, I listen to music all the time in other languages. I love music from all over the world.

To answer your question from a linguistic perspective: Some languages are more considered more pleasing to speakers of certain languages than others. This is because there are many sounds and sound structures in all of the worlds languages and each language only contains a small ammount of them. From infancy, we begin to learn the sounds and sound patterns of our native language or languages and lose the ability to distinguish them from other languages. A classic example of this is the fact that the l/r sound in Japanese is the considered the same sound and that is why it is common for them to make mistakes with both of them. In contrast, swedish has many more vowels than english and we would not be able to differentiate them in the same way a native swede would.

Sorry for that long winded answer, I'm writing my undergraduate thesis on a similar topic right now

If the song is appealing enough, language become obsolete. Also you can like the sounds some languages have even though you dont know what the words mean.

Here is a song i really like even though i dont know the language. I have found a translation of it now though.

A song is more than just vocals. Most people only care about vocals. But in an average band, there will be at least 4 or 5 musicians, relegating vocals to some low overall percentage of the total composition. So if vocals were sung in a language I didn't know...so what? There's still so much more music there to enjoy.

Of course! I do appreciate lyrics, especially when they're written with poignancy and cleverness, but they are frequently translated into English, so I can refer to them if I wish, and even if they aren't, the voice is an amazing instrument. Do you avoid music with guitars, because they can't speak? That would be silly. I do occasionally feel as though I'm missing out on some aspect of the song that I wouldn't as a native speaker, yet emotions still come through in the voice, and that is often what matters most to me when assessing a singer, not their pronunciation or the perfection of a note.

Oh, and here are a few favorite songs in languages other than English.

On the odd occasion I do, but I mostly hear short sound tracks in movies which I tend to chase. When there is something being played live, the circumstances are different. Yes - roughly 90% of the music I listen to is of carribean origin. Reggae, dancehall, ragga etc. and depending on the artist/tempo it can be extremely difficult to understand what is actually being said owing to the fact that my patois is distinctly below par... if you can be arsed have a listen to Bounty Killer's 'No Interview'; it's hands-down my favourite song but I could probably only list about 10 words that I'm sure of.

Rammstein is a great example of a band that made international crossover. I think largely their success was due to Germans sounding angry and many kids need to express their pent up hostilities. Now we need a band that looks and sounds cool, edgy, and badass, but really translates into "I LOVE the cawk!" There would be an awesome laugh for all those who pay attention to the lyrics. :)

Well not usually when the music is centered around the vocals and lyrics. But I listen to very particular genres that tend to sort of avoid that problem, like ambient. Every now and then there is a bit of music that I don't mind being in another language though. Nothing wrong with that.

But with metal its quite different, because the artists use their vocals as a sort of instrument to the point where the lyrics sometimes aren't even audible in your own first language. So basically, yes I listen to metal all the time in different languages. Especially since a lot of the best black and death metal isn't in English, whereas there is a lot of good heavy, power, thrash and doom bands from America and Britain. So mostly its a lot of European black/death, like Norweigian and Swedish and even a couple Japanese black metal bands like Abigail and Sabbat.

Of course. Yes! Music is (http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/topics/topic_music.html) the way that some people find release in, no matter the language. Sadly enough, music doesn't affect some people like it affects us...

We had "Flora's Secret" by Enya played at our wedding, even though this particular song was sung in English. I'm especially moved (transported to another frickin' universe) by Celtic, Welsh, and Irish Music.

I love Anne Phoebe (http://www.annaphoebe.com/bio) who is known as ~
"..."soaring elegantly aloft with Eastern and Western-influenced melodies to conjure all things mysterious for the lifting of all souls.....intelligent improvisation and sweeping, emotional cadences and sonic qualities...."

She was the first (string) violinist of Trans Siberian Orchestra. Hell, she was getting off of the plain in Beirut (for some solo gig in front of an "HMFIC") when it was bombed some years ago...

I regress...

It's really the style, mood and feelings conveyed by the song that gets me. So whatever the language as long as I can relate to it, I listen to it. I listen to loads of Japanese and Korean songs. Singers from these countries always make me feel whatever it is the song is saying even if I don't understand the words. I edit the tag of the song so that whenever I play it, I can see the lyrics both in its original language and as translated in English.

It's easy to understand the lyrics of 70's rock. It's the 80's and 90's that can be difficult (especially heavy metal and grunge).
