Hi !

I was wondering which of windows xp x64 and windows 7 x64 is better for gaming , meaning giving the max fps .

I'm using windows 7 without any effects (aero etc) , but i've read at this benchmark3d.com which makes test with both os tha most of the time

windows xp x64 outperforms windows 7 .

What do you think from your personal experience ?

I know that xp is outdated os , but do we really need to update from xp to 7 just for the looks of it ?

It's not just the looks. Windows 7 has a load of improvements over XP - a more stable kernel, better network stack, awesome power management, you name it. It's what you get for using an OS that's not ten years old. I was a bit reluctant to upgrade at first, but eventually did so and I don't regret it. It is an undeniable truth that XP requires less resources to run, however.

You mentioned disabling stuff such as Aero which is good, but did you try other basic performance tweaks such as turning unnecessary services off? Check Black Viper's site and the SMART utility - both will tell you what every service does and how important it is (many of them have dependencies, some of them hidden, for example if you disable "Power" -> bye bye audio), then give you the choice.

I have ditched Windows XP a long long time ago. Performance wise, a tweaked Win7 installation runs way smoother on my poor netbook than a XP one.

Benchmarks are not always a true depiction of a real life usage. Many games take advantage of Win7's way more sophisticated kernel and multicore capabilities. Just bury XP, it's where it is supposed to be, dead and buried.

When I want to play high end games I usually load up windows 1.0. (pic related... it's my desktop)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/4e/Windows1.0.png

In all seriousness...

I used windows xp 64 bit and I remember having driver issues actually....

I only install xp for three reasons now:
1) Someone else wants xp
2) The machine is running on lower specs than tiny7 minimum requirements (rare), xp performance in this case
3) A home server box with low specs that I don't want to have to mess with (explained below)

The problems with tweaked windows 7 OS:
1) There are so many tweaked versions it's hard to choose which one to download
2) They all seem to be missing core Windows 7 elements, causing program/driver/stability errors
3) Most of them come with a out of control theme made by the tweaker, that is a pain to return to normal

You name it I have tried every tweaked 7 in the book probably: tiny 7, black 7, electric blue 7, batman 7, performance 7, gaming 7, etc....
I've recently found one I like though: it called windows black 7 (I'm sure there is like 10 different people who made a version with the same name lol)

To answer your question:
Windows 7 x64 ultimate or enterprise is your best bet. If your that worried about performance try looking for a tweaked version that you like.
In my experience the "upgrade just for looks" was totally worth it. Everything about windows 7 has made my Daily computer usage more accessible and convenient.
Another large factor is you can only get Direct x 9 on xp.... The industry standard is now at 11 if I'm not mistaken which is not supported on xp.

I wouldn't recommend Tiny7, really. eXPerience did an excellent job with MicroXP, but his Windows 7 releases lack a ton of stuff and that causes plenty of problems.

A friend of mine made a custom, light edition that you probably haven't tried, since only a few people got the links. He removed the really useless stuff (games, very old drivers, languages, etc.) and didn't change anything else. I've been using that since April and had no trouble. You can shoot me a PM if interested.

another issue i noticed with windows 7 is that my pc doesn't overheat that much .

with xp without a cooling base my notebook would shutdown when playing games or watching hd movies

with 7 x64 this doesn't happen , maybe is a video card drive issue with windows xp that causes this

windows XP x64 has numerous compatibility problems, anyway it's 2011, all games are designed for Winows 7 and even the <2000 games work on windows 7 x64, with more or less tweaking.

Windows 7 has excellent power and cooling management when compared to XP. It's one of the things it was praised for.

+1

Windows 7 x64 is your best choice right now.

If you have compatibility problems, grab vmware workstation and build yourself a 32bit 2000 box. Or a DOS box for the really old stuff.

Windows XP is old news, too many people still clinging to it.

Unfortunately Windows XP does not see my 3 TB disk. That's why I like big fan of games had to switch to Windows 7 x64. My video card supports DirectX 11 and I just threw away win xp. This operating system is long gone.

For modern gaming yes of course WinXP only supports DirectX9 officially (it can be hacked for DX10), but there are older games that will not run on Win7 (even in compatibility mode).
XP 64 was never that stable and required special drivers so is not a good choice but XP 32bit was and still is fine. The OS will be supported by Microsoft until end of life in 2014.
For maximum compatibility you are better to run Win7 X64 (to address larger memory blocks) and if you need the compatibility with older OS's run a Virtualising solution such as VMWare workstation.

I've yet to experience a decent "slimmed down" Windows 7.
Maybe one day, not today.

You're looking at loss of network, wireless printing, SP1 update ect. If you can't run an untouched ISO don't bother with what's offered.

My bet is a dead or dying CPU fan, or blocked ducting to the CPU for the oven impression, and an OS in desparate need of a reformat as far as the RAM allocation goes.

artemis i have a 4 year old laptop and i agree with your impression of the cpu fan as the duct for cooloing pumps out very hot air. But the impression is because of its hard disk which is very hot as i keep it on 24/7 for downloading. I download using jdownloader. Could java be the reason for ram usage being so high.

anon
09-28-2011, 04:09 PM
Java per se already demands quite a lot of RAM, and jDownloader uses a maximum heapsize of 512MB by default, which doesn't make things any better. If you're constantly downloading things, I have two suggestions for you.
1. use the following shortcut to launch jD instead of jDownloader.exe:

"%programfiles%\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe" -Xmx64m -jar "D:\JDownloader\JDownloader.jar"
That will limit the heapsize to 64MB, which may not eat as much memory. People also use it for Azureus, although the process is slightly different there.
2. in the program, go to Settings -> Download & Connections -> Advanced, and set the max. buffer size (in the right panel) to 2000. This may reduce disk access depending on your connection speed.

Also, note that the high heat and lack of memory could also be caused by (an)other program(s) demanding many resources and overtaxing the processor. The Task Manager will help you check who's doing what.

Hope it helps.
