Just a FYI,

Supernews is now advertising their retention as being 1058 days for binaries on their website.

EDIT:

Looks like Supernews is offering a $99 for 1 year of service deal in addition to the $9.99 a month special.

Here is a snippet from an e-mail I got from them today. According to the e-mail not only did they increase retention, but it is going to keep spooling up! This is the best part IMO because this means that it won't keep falling behind in retention anymore!

Here at Supernews, we work hard to constantly improve our services at competitive prices. Today, we're excited to announce that we are increasing retention to 1,058 days effective immediately and we will continue to increase retention daily! We will also continue to provide 2,937 days (and growing) of text retention.

Edit: Doh...Didn't realize you had just pointed that out above lol.

I'm sure that Giganews/Supernews' management must have debated before whether or not to have Supernews match Astraweb's retention, and then deciding that doing so would risk cannibalizing Giganews' customer base, since with the retention essentially equalized, there's now no significant difference between Giganews and Supernews NNTP service -- other than the HUGE price gap.

Funny that the other Giganews-owned labels such as Powerusenet and Usenet.net are still listing 800 days retention (and Rhino Newsgroups has been stuck at 200 days retention for years). Just an oversight perhaps.

I can only wonder if the ever-argumentative Highwinds fan-boys will admit that Supernews has clearly become the better deal compared with UsenetServer/Newshosting: same price, same DMCA holes, same speed, same retention - but a BIG difference in completion.

YEs it's quite funny that they don't increase binary retention from powerusenet...maybe they want to still be leader just with one website : giganews!

Supernews is a good Usenet provider but you can't make the assumption they have the same retention as Giganews because they have not been growing day by day - with only 800 days retention it would take them quite a while to reach ~1050 days of retention because they have to spool day by day. Lately the the completion at Newshosting has been incredible, they have been growing day by day slowly improving the Usenet. Newhosting has been offering ridiculous retention at a great price because they want to see the Usenet community grow :) The usenet is incredible because it helps the internet grow because people from all over the world come together to share fun moments with eachother and share the love like star trek geeks - we are human beings and we love to learn and grow :)

You might want to check your facts because Supernews is at 1062 days and they are now spooling day by day.

1)you can't make the assumption they have the same retention as Giganews because they have not been growing day by day - with only 800 days retention it would take them quite a while to reach ~1050 days

- supernews is practically owned by giganews. they are their "daughter company" \
- newshosting thatso praised by you increased their retention adding several hundreds days at once(not that it helped their clients)

Lately the the completion at Newshosting has been incredible

im sorry but you are frigging kidding , right? Oh wait, no,you just happen to advertise their service on your site

slowly improving the Usenet.

More like screwing usenet up with incompletes and DMCA takedowns

they want to see the Usenet community grow

Now how cool is that!! he's got a direct line to Highwinds bosses he knows what they want and acts as a messiah\ praise the lord!

You're wasting your time, Hypatia, the true fanboy will never be deterred by facts or logic.

... and if someone completely fails to notice the title and the original post ( ... and the 2nd and 3rd post ... ) then there's really not much hope.

I just saw that newsgroupservers.net now lists Supernews at the very top of the site's 'best provider' list, so they picked up that retention increase quite fast. (even though the site is outdated on a lot of other things)
