ppl still install codecs?

Last time I looked, codecs helped with unknown file types.....

Unless you use a REAL application like XBMC

ffdshow-tryouts and CoreAVC let me play just about any video file.

On a sidenote, I ironically cannot bring myself to make the latter work on my desktop PC (which has a GeForce 6200 card), while it will do its job perfectly on my netbook and its lowly integrated chipset borrowing from RAM.

still zero reason (for me) to install them. why not just run MCPHC or VLC? plays all without the need to install needless codecs.

I use MPC-HC, but it is still unable to play a video file is there's no codec for it.

For those who have reasons to get into codec packs, I recommend shark007 and Windows preferred directshow filter tweaker tool. Easiest way to get everything working in MC7 x64 for instance. Recent versions seem to have iffy issues with Haali I think.

But before this got steered away, the inquiry was abou x264, which is an ENCODING tool and NOT a codec. It is the most robust and efficient AVC encoder out there, hands down.

Beter K-lite Mega Codec Pack:)

No idea of its current status, but that gave me trouble some years ago. I found out ffdshow is among the things it installs, so why not just plug that by itself anyway.

K-lite is radically improved from version 6 and upwards (32-bit version running on X64 bit machine)
