acid & cool edit pro are the bests for non professional people who want to make music. Other softwares either have too limited features and quality, or are too complicated to use. I use those two for 4 years now.

Adobe Audition (previously Cool Edit Pro), Cubase and Sibelius are the best notation software.

I agree with leonidas CEP is easier to use for a beginner. Cubase and Sibelius are for more experienced arrangers and composers.

If you want the "best of the best", get: SONAR 3 Producer Edition
This is bundled in a 3 CD pack (Emule seems to be the only place to get em right now.. that's where i got mine).
This program seems to be what proffessional sound editors use for movies, music, etc. The program has every music edit/effect/creation function there is when it comes to editing. (it even has a few softwared instruments such as a keyboard piano.. which is quite nice)

note: I reccomend you download this only if your a proffessional, because I'm allmost a Master at useing Adobe Audition (cool edit pro), but damn this program is very advanced.

btw, you should start by learning music editing terms.. such as Reverb, Echo, Pitch, Flanger, etc.

Acid isn't fruty loops, and will be essential to you. You need a sequencer.
