It's seems over the years that animated avatars have gotten more and more over-the-top. They are now at a point where they distract from the entire thread instead of just that specific moron's (usually pointless) postings. And at least to me they are extremely unpleasant.

One or two simple animations can be creative and refreshing to see, but now there's five different explosions going on in the foreground while the background image is itself having a seizure. Very very excessive.

Are you one of these people? What are your thoughts on this?

Along with these kinda aggressive avatars there's also a trend of having nude/vulgar avatars, I never understood what purpose that serve.

I appreciate them as it saves me the bother of reading post history in determining who really isn't worth a fuck.
If it wasn't for that convenient determining factor I'd be left with the solid fallback of foreigners and anyone who likes trance.

Btw mine isn't animated ,it's an optical allusion.

Shit I know how adblock works if it comes down to that, thankfully these sorts of avatars don't stray far from the word games forums.

In general, I like the creativity/flair they bring. I do, however, block the ones that interfere with my ability to read the posts on a page.

Those avatar's serve a purpose. Most teenagers want to be noticed on some trackers, and the more flashy their avatar is, the more people will notice it, be it either due to the right or wrong reasons.
Clearly, I associate such animated avatars with teenagers.

I think they're annoying as fuck, and I end up adblocking most of the worst offenders.

This also bugs me. I'm often surfing these sites in relatively public places, why exactly do I need porn on my screen just because you're an immature 13 year old? We all like staring at tits, but there are a million websites where that's easily available. (The obvious exception, of course, being porn trackers where a NSFW avatar is pretty much expected).

What my avatar says about me: I'm classier, blacker, have more wood, and am more of a playboy than you'll ever be or have.

OT: I honestly like some of the animated avatars. The ones that animate a simple picture, shake it around as if a camera man has Parkinson's and add old film effects are the ones I enjoy looking at. The rest are all disposable for all I care.

EDIT: Someone should research the correlation between number of animated avatars owned by the person, and number of threads* started. It's fucking annoying seeing the same person open 6 threads to discuss "movies" when all they do is copy paste IMDB information and add "CAN'T WAIT FOR SCENE RLS!"

* - Assumption made here being that all threads started by these people are pointless, thus negating the necessity to state the fact.

Most are usually a tad over-the-top and show-off. The animated ones over CG are usually good for a laugh. Also seen one based on Un Chien Andalou, was pretty freaky/cool. Understand the main point that you are driving at though. Case in point: Hombre's avatars :P

Idol and Cabalo already told the thing you need to know: such avatars are mostly used by teens who aren't worth a fuck. I couldn't care less about anything they write in forums.

I like mine. It always bugs me that I can't use it here due to smaller size restrictions.

Avatars are like tattoos and fashion, people merely copy something that they have seen elsewhere and the more idiotic think themselves to making some kind of artistic personal statement.
A good avatar should reflect some part of you but again like tattoos and fashion excess simply makes you look silly.
Of course the people who resort to excess only do it for the attention it brings so I guess most get their wish, although personally I'd rather be noticed for something other than covering my body with tattoos, having horn implants and carving my ears into puzzle pieces.

'Scuse my computer unsaviness. Wouldn't your computer only need to load it once, after which it will use the cache-stored version? I thought a php rotation script might make you load it 6 times, but even those return the same avatar collectively on a single refresh.

That reminds me: People who rotate avatars with every page refresh, and have a stored volume of about 200 different naked girls with their names stamped on top.

6MB GIFs still take a while to load, and caches are transient.

Most PHP rotation scripts I've seen point to a .php file on another server, which delivers a random image as a reply. Browsers may not recognize it as an image due to its unusual extension (although they won't fail to render it) and thus may not cache it. So depending on your settings, the thing will have to reload on every page it's present on. That is, unless your browser aggressively caches resources (like mine does) in an attempt to save bandwidth (like I do).
