yea get a router or if your cheap
get a few nic cards and a crossover cable not sure how good it works, but it does work

Yes, you simply need a cross-over cable rather than straight through. You should be able to pick one up fairly cheaply.

Basically, this means that pins 1&2 connect to pins 4&5 at the other end, and pins 4&5 connect to 1&2. You don't need to do anything with pins 3,6,7&8. This should give you an idea what to look for since the wires are all differently coloured.

it would work the same if all the settings were the same (if that makes sense :huh: )

how are your HDDs formatted (both pcs)? NTFS/FAT32?
what OSes do you run?
have you disabled the Windows Firewall?
any other firewalls to think of?

Physical connections should be the same, but they might not talk to each other if one is 10mbps and the other is 100mbps. Usually a 10/100mbps card will be configured to auto-detect the speed, but if it is set up to be constant 100mbps it won't talk to a 10mbps card.

Other than that, you need to be looking at IP address issues (and I'm assuming that both machines are using TCP/IP protocol).

the laptop has winxp installed and the p.c has win98
ok
laptop manual says it can support both 10 mb/s to 100mb/s(lan) but it should have the cable that is meant for 100mb/s i m using 1
my pc has 10mb/s lan
ok
the 1 has NTFS but it can recognize fat32 (xp)
also
laptop does configure network but doesnt configure p.c
and p.c cant even configure network :huh:
kindly figure out the problem? :unsure: :(

What does that mean?

First thing is to determine if you have compatible IP address ranges.
On the laptop, start a command prompt and type the command "ipconfig". Make a note of the IP address. On the pc , run the command "winipcfg" and again note the IP address.

It sounds likely that the pc's are both running win98 and have manually configured ip addresses. The default is to have a supplied (DHCP) address but the option is given at installation time to override this. You would have to override the option to get the pc's to talk to each other without a DHCP server. The default for XP is also to have a supplied (DHCP) address, but this time the option the override this is not given at installation time because XP's DHCP client can assign itself an IP address if no DHCP server is present.

It is unlikely that XP's DHCP client will assign itself an IP address in the same range as the pc, so you need to configure the network on one of them to match the other. But you need to tell us the results of the commands above first.

It doesn't matter what file systems you've got.
