as you may have heard if you live in the uk that ntl have sneakily changed there general use policy
here (http://www.ntlworld.com/legals/user-policy.htm) under 2.h there is now an ammendment.
this means you get 2hours and 25minutes roughly of full download speed on a 1meg connection.

I suggest you get onto oftel about this and complain:
oftel (http://www.oftel.gov.uk/consumer/advice/contact_us/step3.htm)

and while you are at get to watchdog (http://www.bbc.co.uk/watchdog/contact/computers.shtml) and complain... power to the people
this is what i put into the oftel form and watchdog form:

i have been sold a service giving unlimited access of 1 megabit downloads by ntl at £34.99 a month and they have now changed there general use policy allowing a total of 1gigabyte of information per day that equates to 2hours and 20minutes roughly of using the full service advertised, i was not informed of this change and find it highly unfair on the consumer.

please post this info anywhere and get as many people as you can to send a complaint to oftel as you can.

So will that effect me? I'm on 128K.

Can't believe there doing this :(

nope in my reckoning that means if your comp is going 24/7 it will have to go at 11.5k donload to use the whole bandwith, so it wont affect you really i should imagine.. just the 600k and 1meg users

Thanks.

I'm going to complain anyway, because I was thinking of upgraging.

Screw em!

Im still gonna take what I want when I want.
They will have phsically cap my downloads or cut me off to stop me.

Then They will lose my money cuz I`ll just go somewhere else.

This is how Britain lags behind in the Internet community, They just cant handle the demand.

And NTL are trying to sell us 2MB LOL what a joke.
They Fooked up, time for a hostile takeover im guessin.

"lets alienate some of our customers!!"
Some joker actually thinks this is the best way to solve some of their growing problems.

BOOOO!!

From you link

"Normal use" of the service is defined as up to 1 gigabyte downstream of data transfer daily (which equates to approximately 200 music tracks, 650 short videos, 10,000 pictures or around 100 large software programmes downloaded per day).

I hear what you are saying. However I am fairly ignorant of these matters. Is 1 gigabyte of downloading per day unreasonable. I have the 600k version and I seldom seem to use all of the bandwidth, even with two computers using it at the same time.

Could you tell me when this changed as I am not aware of what it was before.

Cheers

I think that what you are being charged is excessive anyway. I pay £18 per month with pipex for 512K (I think, I connect at 576.0kbps) broadband and I dont think I have a cap.

That's why I try to use English.

I thort the idea of having broadband was for SPEED & not bein a hog on the net. If sum1 downloads 1gig a day then he's gonna have a lot of cd's. Any1 know if blueyonder do optional speed's,,, i.e 128k, 512k etc. Never noticed this on there website, only seen 56k & broadband??? (not to savvy on this kind of stuff, find it hard to take in)

you can download 1GB in a day on streaming music alone, this isn't saved etc either, thats what BB is for, media, and NTL are stopping people using it for that.

As for the products Telewest offer - i don't know

So is it actually impossible to download more than 1 gig a day or is it just a recommended limit?

it's not impossable, but if you go over 1GB /day often you will prob get a letter from them, an example would be the one I had for uploading too much (read it HERE (http://7embry.no-ip.com/ntl.txt))

It would be worth mentioning that there is a very long disscussion about this issue at nthellworld.com - the link to the thread is HERE (http://www.nthellworld.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=35154&perpage=15&display=&pagenumber=1).

alot of repetition in it but prob worth a read to all NTL users, and telewest - you could be next :P

The 600k service I have had from NTL has been so bad so far that I would be lucky if I could download 1gb a day anyway. It brings a whole new meaning to the word "Intermittent"!!!

It is really easy to exceed that limit I assume. I used 2.5gb downstream on my 256k ADSL connection yesterday. I cant even imagine the touble that would be causing if you had a 1megabit line.

Ive had no trouble with my current provider - Blueyonder, they do 512k and 1M Connections at competetive rates...

Also heres a couple of good sites about good broadband providers:

I get this on BT Broadband as well, I didn't think it would be a problem but it is, it's 12 noon and I have already used my 1GB limit.

EDIT: At least they're going about it the right way, if you go over 3 - 4 times in a 14 day period, BT fuck you in the ass as soon as you go over once.

Well, let me get the ol' specs. Geez! That's very explicit indeed! Everybody take off your glasses and you'll be fine!

Bastards :o and they have the bollocks to do this!!!! They are taking the piss people....listen, everytime you have interuption in service with NTL, either in TV, Interactive , Broadband, whatever....complain...believe me ive had shitloads of problems with my 1meg line and tv....box changed 5 times, engineers constantly round, on the phone to customer services and technical etc..they ended up giving me 4 months broadband free, and 6 months on my tv services, plus a groveling letter...fight the power and give it back to them.....remember....everytime you have a problem, and it becomes regular....COMPLAIN !!!!
