I go for the easy button here.

Inspiron 6400. It's ancient and works like a charm.

I resolve my HDD space by using external storage.

A bit outdated, but we only use it when we travel, so it fits our needs.

HP Pavilion DV7 with the same touchpad issues as others if not worse since my cursor actually jumps by itself at times. Definitely driver related in my case, since when I had Windows XP x64 on it there was no jumping cursor. Unfortunately the driver I used then is not compatible with Win7. Also the fan has always been a bit loud and only lasted around 20 months before I needed to give it special care while waiting on a new one. I can't recommend HP at all.

If I were to buy a new one I would most likely choose Acer or Dell.

Yes i am familiar with it, I dont like it, is too light in the specs and any good linux distro will be a better choice...but what you can do?

I'm running a tweaked Windows 7 on it, and it's quite fast. Obviously, you can't do anything resource-intensive nor run newer games because framerates are horrible (however, Doom and Quake 1 work fine and are fun to play when you're bored :P). But what it's meant to do, browsing and office tasks, it does fine.

I have a 5 year old Toshiba Satellite that has a discrete video card and an HDMI port, not many then had the HDMI port but the more expensive offerings and it stays connected to the TV. Now it runs almost 24/7 with a 3TB Western Digital just connected for torrents. It came with Vista installed which I dumped as soon as Windows 7 became available also added additional RAM.

Now the BT traffic goes to the external HDD and also can easily backup the notebook HDD. Wonder if those notebook coolers are as useful as manufacturers claim, worried that it may have restarted a few times on account of the heat.

Computers become obsolete relatively fast and this Toshiba has been fine so far ... knock on wood.

The highest quality and great design are combined in this laptop. The Dell D600's keyboard has great keys, they are very comfortable for typing, the touchpad is very comfortable for usage, you do not need mouse.
I am really very happy to have it.

Also I'm a little fuzzy on what a real pirate is but I always pictured them sailing ships and carrying guns and plundering stuff and not having a lot of extra time for pretending to be cool by labeling themselves some macho sounding name as they sit idly in front of a computer screen.:)
