kicks off in an hour, just saw a load of them on the news - not one of them without a leather jacket, fingerless gloves and a hat covering unwashed hair - classic.

I don't get it. I admit I had to Google "Pikey" because I had never heard the term, but I see that basically, they are what we sometimes call "squatters" in the US. Pretty much thieves, bums & vagrants that pick a house or piece of land that doesn't belong to them & live there for a while. What I don't get though, is how they can own cars & trailers and such. All those things need to be registered & insured (in the US at least) and from what I read, most of these pikeys don't have permanent addresses. How do they get away with that?

No, never got around to seeing it. I looked it up on IMDB, & it looks pretty good. I'll try to check it out later today. Brad Pitt a Pikey I see.

That's not quite accurate. They tend to basically be migrant workers who buy a piece of land and then regardless of its protection status do whatever they like with it. Usually they make small villages on it with some permanent buildings/caravans which you would normally need planning permission for. The stereotype is the Snatch Brad Pitt figure: Irish, loaded with cash through illegal activities, not paying tax, aggressively insular socially, polluting and generally a nuisance.

Having said that, maybe these communities where pikeys end up ought to complain a bit more to the selfish arseholes in their midst who sell the land in the first place. Also, it's a bit difficult to keep a place clean and tidy I guess if you don't have the right to rubbish collections (because you couldn't pay for them even if you wanted to). I don't have a massive problem with a traveller lifestyle, but tbh society isn't really set up for them and there's not enough of them to make it worth anyone's while to cater for them.

Back when I was in Melbourne we called them "Corio people". When you see their place they have about 10 non-worky cars in the backward, a 16 year old mother with a 30 year old husband (has mullet of coarse) and about 20 kids running around like crazy. Drug busts was common and of coarse they were welfare socialists.

The pikeys I've met (and there have been a lot) were mostly scummy cunts who let their kids do what they want no matter how much they annoy everyone else and allow their young lasses to dress like prostitutes while also being very loud and sweary. True story.

I'm not really understanding what's going on. I thought these people were supposed to be Travellers. So why don't they, you know, travel?

In their so-called "mobile" homes...

I really just don't get it. :(

100% of the pikeys I’ve met have been utter cunts. they go around tarmacking peoples drives and doing general labour that they're not qualified or skilled to do, charge for it, then six months later you've found they've fucked it up or a wall they’ve put up falls down and kills someone, KILLS THEM TO DEATH!!!.

All their kids are little cunts who need a good beating. Don't want your kid to be a cunt? Don't let him grow a mullet and do whatever the fuck else he wants!! and don't get his fucking 20 shithouse uncles involved when he pisses off decent working people!! There's a clan of them down near where my aunt lives at the moment making decent money out of burgling peoples garages.

They should all "travel" back to Ireland and fucking stay there!! I'd rather we had common decent criminals than fucking pikey criminals!!!1

When I'm president of the universe, I'll burn down the entire farm, concrete it over and build the world’s largest caravan then take out a restraining order on the lot of them!!!

Funnily enough, that's pretty much exactly what I said to the missus about it yesterday. True story. They must move, in order to exist. She is rather learned in this department however, so here is her take on it.

As far as I understand it, there are a couple of reasons. Firstly, they are appreciating the benifits of education and far more Travellers these days want to keep their children in school, they therefore need to stay in one place to allow continuity at the same school. Having started to live in one place, they obviously build up relationships and a community which becomes hard to leave. Secondly, even if they wanted to keep travelling about, there are no longer the facilities for them on the roadside - there are very few sites where they can legally stay, and verges are often obstructed intentionally by the council, or simply not wide enough to accomodate caravans. The Dale Farm situation has highlighted how few legal Traveller sites there are with spaces - it looks like there aren't actually enough spaces available (certainly in the local counties) for the residents, once evicted, to move to. Another point is the type of accomodation they live in - I can understand why people think they should just move into brick houses as they're obviously not on the move any more, but there is something in their culture, you could say in their blood, that means they feel claustrophobic in a permanent building. I don't know much about it (I've spoken to a few Gypsies) but maybe it's the knowledge that they can move if they need to (and considering their past as well as contemporary prejudices it's something they often have to do, and may feel trapped without). As far as the council's position on Dale Farm is concerned, they are flouting the recommendations of the UN and Amnestry International, and hanging it all on the fact that it's a greenbelt site. It's a fucking scrap yard. And did you know that construction companies no longer have to prioritise building on brownfield sites over green belt?! It's a fucking disgrace - one law for huge corporate bodies and another for the ethnic minority.

My personal experience of them is ''Would you like to buy some chainsaws lads'' shouted out of a white van in an Irish accent. Chainsaws which they've clearly robbed off someone I probably know who's trying to run a business. I guess the only ones that venture out of their holes are the ones that go out robbing / selling robbed stuff. They need a new PR man, or something else. Fucking pikeys.

load of hippy bollocks.
the only reason they want to be able to move is so that they can disappear once they've commited too many crimes in the area they're in and there's nothing left to steal. Other than that, they're just a bunch of tax dodgers like what hippies a...ah, I see.

Bankers that can't count and sell mortgages to people with no income, travellers that don't travel..

the whole world has gone fucking mental!

A traveller used to move around following seasonal work, harvests, berry picking, fixing pans, sharpening knives (nicking stuff of an occasion obviousment) and never outstaying their welcome for too long. Setting up your own village isn't being a traveller it is being a shanty town dweller.

Actually the headmaster of one of the schools in the Dale farm area was on the radio a few weeks back complaining that the traveller parents seemed to view school as something they could drop their kids at when the mood took them rather than as a permanent fixture of their lives. This mirrors my own experience with them when I was a kid. At the same time every year they'd descend on our school sporadically for several months before fucking off again, leaving it in disarray. For some reason they were giants, and they always came in sibling pairs, and they never seemed to know how old they were. I swear we had some 15 year olds in year 7. They pretty much spent their entire time bullying and fighting, and none of them could fucking read properly which made lessons interesting for everyone else. Parents didn't seem to give a shit. You don't need to read to procreate and lay tarmac I guess.
Anyway I digress....if travellers didn't actually erect these permanent buildings they seem to be so afraid of they wouldn't keep falling foul of planning law. If they did actually live in temporary accommodation on the land they bought no-one would stop them. It's the fact they are building permanent structures that is causing so many problems.
Bottom line is, they just have an insular culture and don't want to change but want the world to change for them. It's an understandable human characteristic, but hardly one that has any future.
