Ah, Kunal.... are you hearing voices again?

@Basics,

If you don't have any personal information on your PC then it's up to you whether you trust the buyer with (whatever) the contents of your HDD may be.

You are aware that all of your passwords are probably recoverable?

What DLs do you have that you feel are of any value?

Were I you, I would probably at least reformat, if not run killdisk, and let the new owner start from scratch. You can always burn your files to CD and offer dupes if you'd like...

how can i find sensitive info on my pc?

how are they recoverable, im sure paypal etc dont store my passwords do they

abu_has_the_power

dude, instead of risking it, back up ur hd using norton ghost corpate, and store the back up image on another hd. then format ur hd, and sell it. if u really need to keep all ur shit, then do that. i would just back up the movies and games and save game files and some other stuff

Clocker's solution is really the only safe option. Anything else is just asking for trouble, even if you know who you are selling to. How do you know they won't sell it on after a short while, possibly with all your info still on there.

Before i sell a pc, i format it and install a fresh copy of windows and burn the drivers on a disk and thats it.

A recovery disk is good to make to give with the PC.

i was just thinking that ive got about a thousand albums on here thought it might push up my price

Evil Gemini
11-13-2003, 02:24 AM
Nah man dont do anything like that.

A few extra bucks isnt worth getting busted for. People are getting fined for downloading music, im pretty sure this would be worse.

If you want to get more moeny for your PC do what i said with a recovery disk, buy a cheep internal modem because when i was selling one of my PC's everysingle person asked if it was internet ready.

What are the specs of this PC that your selling ?

and if the guy's an asshole, he'll call ur isp, or riaa, or 911, and report u for pirating songs. don't be a fool

Put the albums on a separate partition.
Format and reinstall the system to remove your personal information.

do u mean a separate partition on the same harddrive? wat's the point of that. the buyer will still c the files

ok that sounds good but how do i do the partition thingy?

i live in uk so i dont have to worry about the riaa etc, also i'm gonna sell it to a student so i'm sure they aint gonna be sniffing at all this "free"music!!

Well if you right click on each folder and choose Properties it will show you the size of what's in that folder.

Add them all up. What i'm trying to see is if it could all be burned to CDs.

Ah hell, screw that VB.

Burn 'em all to floppies and sell your PC as a "classic".

So true.

Well... basics seems to have left the conversation for now so...

basics, you can use Partition Magic to partition your drive if all that music won't fit on a few CDs. Burning them to CDs would be the preferable choice.

He missed the capital "I" at the beginning and the period at the end. Also replace a few 'and's with a comma.

lots of funny clumsey poeple on this thread lol, :P

I sel comps commercially on a small scale, and i ALWAYS give a computer to the customer with a clean hardrive and anything that is nesseary for normal computer functions, i do not leave illegally downloaded files on it , for many many reasons,
A. you downloaded it they can too
B. Hwne they get caught useing regular kazaa and see all those files, they will say they were all already there... (guess who owned the computer prior to them)
C: I personally don't like messy computers, filled with crap i may or my not use... i like to be able to start with a fresh install not a dirty registry...
D: must i go on??

If you want to sell games, then sell thewm as a cd not with the computer... or say that you will include a CD pack of games, for an extra price... And please apply comen sense to all of your buiseness transactions... ;) ok then that is all am going to say, hope it didn't come across like i was flaming you... no hostilities intended, but you are seriosly putting yourself at risk of identity theft as well as many other things...

i agree with clocker. definitely use a program that can do a full reformat (such as Killdisk, tho i guess there are other programs that can do it).

a regular reformat does NOT truly erase the hard drive-- it just marks the space as "empty" but the old data is still there and much of it will be recoverable.
