UK judge ruled that Internet service provider, BT must use their new censorship
technology "Cleanfeed" to prevent subscribers from accessing a file sharing
website by the name of Newzbin2. The actual block isn’t supposed to take
effect until sometime after mid-October.

Newzbin2 client program

Posted on September 13, 2011 by MrWhite

We are pleased to announce the first Newzbin2 client software. This is targetted
at UK users who are likely to get blocked in October. This first version is a
bit rushed and so not very polished. As time goes by we shall improve it and add
features. There is no help & precious little explanation but we’ll answer
questions in the comments.

Unfortunately it is Windows only for the time being. We will be producing an OSX
and Linux version hopefully very shortly.

We’d be happy to get feedback in the comments below. Please give props to Mr
Violet for his sleepless nights (literally) in getting this done in a matter of
days.

Update: erm, a smarter thing for us to have done for errors is ask you to raise a
support ticket FAO Mr Violet. Doh.

Update2 16th Sept ’11: New version out. Links should now open in a new browser.
Misc other small changes.

Update3 21st Sept: there are problems using OSx version to download NZBs, we’re
looking at it.

Update3 19th Sept ’11: More updates including an OSx

Newzbin2 gets around ISP website blocking with new client

Newzbin2 is introducing a new client in an effort to work around the court-ordered
website blocking that will soon be put into effect. Newzbin2 staff isn’t
discussing exactly how the new software client works but it appears to get around
BT’s website block using a suite of techniques including encryption.

The UK ISP BT was ordered to make use of their child pornography software to block
subscriber access to Newzbin2 after a complaint was put forth by the Motion Picture
Association. The actual block isn’t supposed to take effect until sometime after
mid-October but users feared that it was implemented early after a DNS server issue
disrupted site access.

Apparently that DNS issue was just the kick Newzbin2 staff needed to push forward
their implementation of promised anti-blocking measures. Today the team behind the
site, TeamRDogs, released Newzbin Client 1.0.0.127 which is specifically designed
to circumvent BT’s Cleanfeed software. It should be noted that the client is
currently Windows only, with OSX and Linux versions promised.

“We are pleased to announce the first Newzbin2 client software,” said Newzbin2's
Mr. White. “This is targeted at UK users who are likely to get blocked in October.
This first version is a bit rushed and so not very polished. As time goes by we
shall improve it and add features.”

So how exactly does this thing work? Well, Newzbin2 isn’t specifically saying.
White did say in an email,

“We can’t say how our client application works but it uses a number of techniques
to utterly defeat Cleanfeed.”

“The application also has Agility Technology to break any updated web censorship
methods or anti freedom countermeasures.”

TorrentFreak took the client for a spin and dug into some of the network packets
with the help of protocol analysis software. The site confirmed the client does
defeat a number of the Cleanfeed measures. The client first tries to resolve the
domain of Newzbin2 the traditional way, with DNS. If this fails TorrentFreak says
“without going into too many details, an encrypted session is initiated between
the client and the Newzbin2 site in a way that Cleanfeed won’t like, rendering
blocking impractical and snooping more or less impossible.”

Additionally the client offers connection to the website via the TOR anonymity
network and provides tools to access other resources like IMDb and search engines.
The client is still being iterated on and more features are to be added to make
the method more reliable as the October site block looms.

ISP ordered to block Newzbin2 by British court

Yesterday a landmark decision was made in British court. A UK judge ruled that
Internet service provider, BT must use their new censorship technology to
prevent subscribers from accessing a file sharing website by the name of Newzbin2.
BT’s censorship technology, called Cleanfeed, was originally intended for
blocking child pornography.

This case between the MPA and BT has been ongoing for some time, but ruling was
finally issued on July 28. The introductory text of the ruling itself is
interesting.

“In these circumstances, the Studios contend that the only way in which they can
obtain effective relief to prevent, or at least reduce the scale of, these
infringements of their copyrights is by means of an order against BT (and
thereafter the other ISPs) of the kind now sought.”

This entire idea that the only way to prevent or reduce piracy is through
technology developed for a separate and more explicit purpose is ridiculous.
Cleanfeed was developed specifically to “minimise the availability of… child
sexual abuse images hosted anywhere in the world.” To leverage something with
such a specific purpose for something much broader, and completely different in
nature, seems inappropriate.

The MPA is requesting that Cleanfeed be used to prevent access to content of their
choosing. That seems problematic for a few reasons. First, does that mean the
MPA can simply request a site be blocked and it will be so? Will there be some
investigation in place to at least prove that a site is distributing copyrighted
material or are we to take the MPA at their word? Second, the MPA has to know that
for every one site that is blocked another two will pop up to replace it. Using
this technology isn’t a solution, but instead a bandaid to make content owners feel
better.

The other open question is does this ruling make ISPs responsible for the content
provided by websites accessed by their subscribers? It seems like it does and
that appears to be a very slippery slope. Just the fact that this ruling has
happened is going to mean the MPA will go after every other ISP in the region
with a similar injunction.

BT is contending that using Cleanfeed for this purpose will be highly ineffective.
They make the correct point that users will quickly find ways to circumvent the
block and get to the content they desire. The judge agrees that the tools are
there but essentially says users are too lazy to make use of them. ”Even assuming
that they all have the ability to acquire such expertise, it does not follow that
they will all wish to expend the time and effort required.” That seems quite
hopeful and the more likely outcome is that subscribers will make good use of the
tools available to get the content they want.

Newzbin2 has responded to the ruling but there isn’t exactly any new information
in their response. BT has opted not to appeal. BT and the MPA will meet back up
in court in October to figure out exactly how this block is going to work.

they want to get their hands on the only thing out there that still to some point screams out loud- freedom!
And copyright infringement is just a piss-poor excuse.
someday all those corrupt and greedy ,corporations, all those who consider themselves to be Indisputable Rulers will pay in blood full price when people arise to unleash revenge on those ones who kept them under unjust oppression
No corrupt judge out there can save them from the deadly embrace of Hel

Arise, children of the Internet
The day of glory has arrived!
Against us of tyranny
The bloody banner is raised
Do you hear, in the courts,
The roar of those ferocious criminals?
They're coming right into our homes
To imprison our sons and women!

Viva la Revolucion!

I think we're going to end up with our own underground network in a few years. Maybe a new BBS world :P

It's already here (sort of). It's TOR. Even with the UK block, you could still get to these websites with TOR. The internet's going to be disneyfied before too long and all the fun stuff will go back to the darknet.

Does anyone have a link for the Newzbin2 Client....?? it appears to have been wiped off the face of the internet!

The biggest problem (w/ Newzbin2) isn't some hokey, easily defeated censoring attempt, but the continued lousy 'vacuum' used by the 'operators'/'editors' (or lack thereof since it's 'reincarnation').

Really poor performance.
