View Full Version : Why The Hell Don't You People Know How To Spell?

Vamp

No offence, but perhaps some of you should stop with the games and worry more about your school-work... And if you're finished school, and still make a fool of yourself on this board, I suggest you re-enroll. No offence to anyone :D

Now...

If someone is not a winner, they're a LOSER, that denotes that they lose, calling someone a looser, means that they are looser then something else that is tight... Why the hell would you call someone that?

Your - This denotes possesion... You can't say to someone "Your gay" Because most people don't own gays. Please, if you want to say someone is something, it's you're (you are) "You are gay"

You don't lend something from someone, you borrow something from someone
you don't borrow someone something, you lend someone something.

And Canuck, Sword is spelt as it's written, not SORD!

Thanks for your time.

It's in Gameworld, because everyone on all the other boards are actually literate... This tells me something about the gamers of the world. <_<

Why are you getting so mad?

If they are illiterate then let them be.

no, people write just as poorly in the other forums too.

the internet in general leads to poor spelling and grammar because it gives little kids, high school dropouts, leet poseurs, and non-native speakers (of whatever language they're using) a chance to influence each other with their mistakes. i don't think a lot of them realize they're picking up bad habits from each other. imagine what kind of english you would write, if english were not your first language and you tried to learn it from little kids and backwood hillbillys on AOL. imagine what kind of english you would write, if you were 10 years old and you were learning from semi-literate teenagers and foreigners.

not to mention that public schools in most english-speaking countries are pretty pathetic nowadays. <_<

I don't claim to be perfect when it comes to spellnig and garmmer, but I try my best to be sure that what I say makes sense and is spelt as correctly as possible.

But this forum is not just for English/American people, it's for people all over the world and alot of them don't speak English as their native tongue so to complain about everyone that mispell's words or use bad grammer is a little unfair in my opinion. That's not to say that there aren't some people here who just don't care about their spelling etc, as i'm sure some just type their messages as fast as they can and don't check for typo's and such. And also there's alot of people who i'm positive type in capital letter's deliberately because they know it's not allowed and does piss alot of other's off.

So I both agree and disagree with your post, there is alot of poor spelling etc some of which isn't needed, but at the same time some of it can't be helped so generally it's better to just make as much of it out as possible and try not to let it bother you :-)

Also, was your subject heading intended as a joke based on the content of your thread? "Why The Hell Don't You People Know How To Spell?, It's sickening!"? All but for 1 word begin's with a capital letter, which is poor structure ;-P

Yeah I know... I like typing out headings with an uppercase letter in the beginning of each word... Just feels comfortable, to have my finger push that shift button :D

But, you're right, the lowercase letter on sickening is a typo. :P

11-13-2003, 07:43 PM
i never use uppercase letters other than to emphasise a point, usually

i also don't use full stops at the end of my sentences, unless another sentence immediately follows that sentence, on the same line

however, i can spell

if you don't like how i post, i don't care

SniperInTheShadows
11-13-2003, 07:55 PM
@ 3rd gen noob - I don't really care how other's actually type, usually it's not to difficult to figure out what other's are on about depsite any typo's and such. But there are some people who post in combination's of upper and lower case letter's mixed with numbers and symbol's who's post's are nigh-on impossible to make out so I tend to skip past those as they do my head in when I try figuring out what it say's lol

@ Vamp - Uu, I ment wasn't all the capital letter's typo's? lol I was, jokingly and with no offence intended, being sarcastic ;-P

My words:

"Hi, my name is Cade Laguana, what is your name?"

Somehow...translates to:

"HI MAH NM3 IS CAED LAGUANA WUT IS UR NM3?!?!?!!!? OMG"

Whats funny is that, when you translate something, in the translate box, the thing translated, always ends with something stupid like "OMG" or "LOL". Now thats some funny fucked up shit :D

But yes, that is the typical pimple faced, masturbating, 12 year old AOL user.

Hmmm let me see what that would be translated into gay.

There are six reasons why people dont appear to be able to spell properly

1. English is not their first language.

2. As a result of common typing mistakes, still makes sense, so no edit.

3. As a result of a wonky keyboard, as 2.

4. Pissed out of their mind. Still makes sense to them.

5. As a result of TXT messaging. People get into bad habits.

6 Some people just dont give a Sh*.

I have probably missed some out, but then not being able to count will be another thread. As long as eveyone enjoys themselves that is all that counts.

I from South Africa. English is my first language, and I speak/write it fine.
Are you adverbially challenged at all.

Oh and placing "and" immediately after a comma is considered particularly poor form. Even in these slack days.

You may have to pay the syntax (for boab).

First off, your wrong. noone is stupid hear. There smart people who can't type, that's all. There just typing errors. Do you here me?

---------------------------

Okay, here is the scoop. I cannot agree with you more. Yes, people have typos, and if you are intelligent enough, you will know when a person wanted to hit the "o" key instead of the 'i' key (they are next to each other).

Then there are people who just don't know. They don't know the correct spelling or grammar.

There is no "First off". I believe people intend on saying "First of all".

What is "noone"? A friend of mine has the last name of "Noone", but I believe people here intended on typing "no one". Perhaps 'nobody" would be a better alternative.

Some people don't know the difference between "they're , their or there" and "your or you're".

I am no expert on typing, but I have the Merriam-Webster Dictionary (http://www.m-w.com/) link on the top of my favorites.

Somebody quoted this:

Who gives a fuck so long as you can...
It sould be "Who gives a fuck, as long as you can..."

Oh and placing "and" immediately after a comma is considered particularly poor form. Even in these slack days.
by whose standards? grammar fascists like strunk & white? it may not be elegant, and it may not be economical, but it's hardly incorrect.

it's one thing to point out that people are misspelling common words & using grammar that destroys the intentions of their words, but some people on the other hand are much too slavishly respectful of what their elementary school teachers declared to be the absolute truth. "never begin a sentence with 'but.' never put a comma immediately before 'and.' an essay always consists of five to seven paragraphs consisting of a one-paragraph introduction, a one-paragraph conclusion, and a lot of blah blah blah in the middle. if it isn't in webster's dictionary, then it isn't a word." sure, drilling such rules into students' brains will cut them off from going near certain mistakes, but it also cuts them off from a lot of things that are perfectly acceptable as well.

when trying to make a point like this, i'm fond of deferring to "classic" authors. so here's the first paragraph of charles dickens' great expectations for your enjoyment:

My father's family name being Pirrip, and my christian name Philip, my infant tongue could make of both names nothing longer or more explicit than Pip. So, I called myself Pip, and came to be called Pip.
dickens continues using the much maligned "comma and" throughout the rest of the book.

Who said it was incorrect ? Did you actually read the words I posted.

Great Expectations - you are of course aware that the use of the language, particularly in the first person, was intended to show the socio-economic / educational background of the character and not the author.

Or did you think that this was a natural way for CD to write ?

The particular Pip quote (as the opening lines) denotes not only this, but the youth of the character. How else would one explain his reaction to the mysterious person he meets shortly thereafter ?

actually, yes, i did. in his own correspondence, dickens used "comma and" more often than you could shake a stick at. it is most definitely not a sign of poverty or poor education, despite the author's working class background. if anything, it's old fashioned and, like i said, it seems clumsy to most people nowadays because it's been deemed unnecessary.

here's an interesting article which describes "comma and" as the Oxford Comma. it's also called the Harvard Comma and the serial comma, alternately.
http://www.askoxford.com/asktheexperts/faq...her/oxfordcomma (http://www.askoxford.com/asktheexperts/faq/aboutother/oxfordcomma)

and a nice little discussion of the role of journalism in creating the mythical rule against the serial comma.
http://www.swcp.com/info/essays/serial-comma.htm

i did read precisely what you wrote, and i equated "poor form" with "incorrect." if you care to clarify the difference, or perhaps explain how poor form is suitable to poor and stupid people but unsuitable to the wealthy and educated, i'm all ears.

Vamp, I support you and offer my opinion,
Now first of all, I am about to set myself up for the same ridicule and name-calling that's been dumped on you for voicing your opinion and obvious frustration by your daringly bringing up a subject that is so very prevalent throughout our society....illiteracy....the product and end result of (for one thing) broken homes, one-parent homes or homes where both parents were compelled to go out and find a job, leaving the child to fend for his or herself. (alright, this doesn't, nor do I mean to insinuate that it is, applicable to everyone simply because of misspelling a word). This then leaves the child without the proper parental guidance he or she needs to carry on, in a home environment, the education which had begun at school. No one to oversee the child's homework or answer questions the child might have about his schoolwork or, in this case, to point out the correct spelling of words. The child then does poorly in school, realizes he cannot keep up with the class, get's discouraged and perhaps drops out. Left then to survive with only remnants of whatever education might have been fortunate enough to sink in and, sadder still, left to the mercy of what he sees and hears in movies, video games, gangsta-rap, hip-hop and tv. This now becomes part or all of his education and abilities and completes all the individual has to draw from when posting a simple message or perhaps having to write a business letter or other communique.

Your attempts to point out common syntax, grammatical, and spelling errors like "your" for "you're (you are)", "looser" for "loser" (one who did not win) etc, etc, are admirable but will only fall on deaf, and somewhat defiant, ears. These folks have no recourse now except to strike back in the only way they know how.....by name-calling and ridicule (yes, ok, bring it on!)

Let me leave on a positive, constructive note however and perhaps offer something, a simple tool, that, if properly used (and accepted) might just help those that may want to help themselves blend in with the mainstream and keep themselves from drawing negative attention to themselves....not for WHAT they say, but simply for how WHAT they say is spelled.

http://www.m-w.com/promos/button/button.htm

Follow this link and install the Merriam-Webster OnLine Dictionary on your browser toolbar.
Quoting from the page:

Add this helpful tool to the toolbar of your internet browser. Then, highlight any word in a Web page, click the button, and a dictionary entry of the word will appear. It's free and easy to install. Just follow the instructions.
To those who need it, use it and if you learn to spell even one word per day correctly then that would be a small battle won in the fight against illiteracy and you would have done your part to help yourself. Don't use it? Well, that's your prerogative too.

Good luck,
mrlessk

It's a figure of speech, used in this context for comedic effect.

As in " that was poor form old man". To jump a queue, would be poor form. To not hold a door open would be poor form. I don't think that would be synonymous with incorrect.

Perhaps I just read to much Wodehouse old bean.

Sorry for the lack of clarity. It just shows that if thing are not expressed clearly, or if they are mis-read then this can lead to misunderstanding and possibly even friction.

Maybe that's the point the chap was making.

As in " that was poor form old man". To jump a queue, would be poor form. To not hold a door open would be poor form. I don't think that would be synonymous with incorrect.
understood. i'm aware of "poor form" as a description of bad etiquette, although i took it more in the literal sense as it relates to sports where there is a correct technique and an incorrect one, i.e. in the sense that a novice shows poor form in golf or tennis.

hopefully you did bother to browse the articles i linked, and noticed that academics favor the serial comma. personally i'm in the habit of omitting the serial comma in any list of 3 or more nouns or adjectives ("red, white and blue" rather than "red, white, and blue"), but it is technically incorrect to omit it.

but then again, i believe that language is fluid and it's dictated by common usage, rather than by a static vocabulary & grammar. to invent new words, spelling and grammar is to follow in the footsteps of people like shakespeare, who were unsatisfied with the language as prescribed by pre-existing rules.
