The computer makes weird noises at boot up and then stops after a while. What's wrong? Is it normal?

Yeah... Is it coming from the something inside the tower? The internal speaker? What does it sound like?

If it's a low-pitched, rapid, clicking noise... your hard drive is probably dead.

[edit: At least I can still notice my spelling mistakes, even while drunk. ]

Probably sleeve bearing failure on one of your fans. Sleeve bearings are normally quieter that ball bearings, but wear out relatively quickly. Suggest you check your fans (particularly cpu fan) NOW.

Edit: normally.

If by chance it is the cpu fan,and if it is an amd type processor...[be careful]when removing the fan or messing with the heat sink[even a little] as it can damage the chip underneath!

Where are you, The Kiler? Please tell us what type of sound you hear.

yes i ocassionallly have similar problems, orginating from the fan housed in the power box.

my pc is always 55 degrees c and above and recently added a new fan so now it's always about 47-48.

sometimes when I boot up i can hear terrible grinding sounds from my power fan...probably wearing down from all the heat but my computer is still relatively new however i do keep it on 24/7

Oh.. Opps.. Didn't check. The computer isn't dead. The processor is Intel Celeron.

It's like a small little weird sound. Can't describe it. It's not beeping or clicking. Sounds like a fan though.

Are you missing any small pets?

As was said, it's probably a fan. You're still being very vague in your description though. Take the side off your case and listen to where/what the noise is coming from; shouldn't be that hard to work out. It'll be either the CPU, GPU or the PSU fans, or the hard drive, or maybe even an unhealthy cd drive spinning up.

Do some investigating. ;)

Hmm.. Sounds gone... Wait it's back now. I have to find out what it is!

That's funny, I didn't hear it this time.

Sneaky little devil, ain't it?

I think I heard it but is seems to have stopped.

Jokes aside. What are you trying to do, get us pissed off?

Tell us what it is.

I've got an old 933 does that starts up sounding like a lear jet then after 10 minutes settles down, in my case its the cpu fan, god knows why, maybe it likes to be warm, If the noise is coming from the cpu either get a new psu or install a new fan, or just forget about it and leave it on.

Unfortunately my cpu fan on the amd 2000 didn't have the decency to make a noise, just died a quiet death and took the cpu with it!

Well... It's not AMD. It's an Intel Celeron.

Ah, the celeron fan screech.

There we were, thinking you had one of those screechy amd fans.

Don't tell me the RIAA is mixed up in this, too?

That's where the screeching came from. Why did you have to go and share those files?

Oh... I found out what it was... Was one of 'em RIAA mice... Squeaking in my CPU fan...

The illegal music gave the mouse lots of talking with them RIAA agents back at base... I had to cholorinate the machine to get rid of that mouse.
