ok, i got a WD hard drive....80 gig.... i have 3 partitions with it....and the biggest one....the one that holds games and movies, just went poof.... it appears on My computer, but when i try to access, i get the following message:

The disk file structure is corrupt and unreadable.

I havent done ANYTHING to it.... the other 2 partitions are ok, and when i try to access a game that is in that partition, it tells me that

"Te drive or network connection that the shortcut "xxx.ink" refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, and then try again"

k now this worries me.... a lot....any ideas? I already looked in windows xp site and found nothing....

thx
DWk

Get a file recovery program (such as EasyRecoveryPro) then search the partition for your movies and savegames that you want to keep. Restore these to another partition, then reformat the corrupt partition and run checkdisk with both options ticked (checkmarked) so any bad sectors are marked and won't get re-used.
If checkdick does find bad sectors, it's probably only a matter of time before something like this happens again so start thinking about getting another HDD.

You posted this 8 minutes after your previous post. That's not enough time for checkdisk to check the drive prooperly. Are you sure you had both options ticked?

DWk
11-15-2003, 11:33 AM
which BOTH options? i had to start->run->chkdsk cuz i cant find anything else....

k now the problem got weirder.....

first, i assume this
http://www.klboard.ath.cx/index.php?showtopic=81743
has something to do with the problem as well.....

second.....when i tried to reboot my computer yesterday (i finished burning everything after recovering, and the pc went REALLY SLOW) it asked me to insert a BOOK diskette on A:

well i got mad and was like "omg c: as well? no way im doing this tonite...." so i just turned off my computer....and right now that i woke up i turned on the computer almost sure i was gonna have to do something else....and it booted up normally..... still without the E: partition though

now DWk is in ph34r

If the partitions are on the same HDD, I'd say it was going tits up. :(
I know what I'd be doing next...

Either:
1)
Install a new HDD on primary master, install XP fresh on there and copy over everything you want to keep from the old HDD before dumping it.

or 2)
a. Backup anything that you don't want to lose that is on a partition on that HDD - either to CDR/CDRW or (preferably) another HDD.
b. Reboot to the XP installation CD and repartition the whole bloody HDD, then format and install again.
c. Save up for a new HDD.

Re-partition the HDD, re-install XP and then check all the partitions as describled above.
You're in for a long wait with 80GB to check thoroughly but if errors are found, Windows will mark them as bad and not use them in future; this would mean, however, that if some sectors have gone bad, others will go bad as well.

Yeah - you could use this one as a secondary one for temporary stuff (downloads possibly) but if there are errors on it I wouldn't trust it with anything permanently.

There should be a log file somewhere... probably in the root of the system drive - C:\

DWk

and if i run chkdsk from dos....it makes a quick check and gives me 0 bad sectors....

Smurfette
11-15-2003, 02:34 PM
Running from DOS only does a quick check, not thorough.

Try searching the computer for chkdsk and see if there's a log file in the same folder.

DWk
11-15-2003, 02:51 PM
chkdsk.exe is located in system32 folder....but no log file there....

any other ideas?

Smurfette
11-15-2003, 03:27 PM
OK, try this:
chkdsk E: /r

If you put that in the Run box it'll ask you if you want to unmount the volume (because Windows is using the drive), respond N and it'll as you if you want to schedule the drive to be checked during the next boot. Respond Y and reboot.
Do it last thing at night and leave it going cos it's gonna take a bloody long time.

Had exactley the same problem myself, and with a western digital too, In the end i stuck it as a slave on another machine, lost the partitrion though, even when i reformatted it came up as FAT 8!!! in the end i fdisked the whole damn thing and so far its been running fine. Lesson I learnt thiough is Backup regularly oh and don't buy WD seagate barracuda is probably one of the most robust
