Authoring, And .vob Files Writing To Dvd ?

hey, i was tlaking to a friend, and he was saying he uses a programme to authore the files the mpeg2 files from a BIn file into vob files to put on a dvd to watch on a stand along dvd player, iv never wrote to dvd so could any1 explain to me, because soon i will be getting a dvd writer, thanks chris

may sound stupid but why do people do this, i mean put on dvd, does the quality become slightly better ? or is it that you can fit alot of movies on 1 disk
