Really Big Sound Problem

i noticed that a few days ago some sounds in games wern't working like when i shot a gun it wouldnt make a sound but when people shoot their gun it makes a sound, now i just been on GTA vice city and noticed that only the radio sounds work in that and i just went on some site to play a swf file which was working a few days ago now doesnt play the sound.

wtf is wrong??

k now the sounds on msn dont work, could it be the file type? mp3 still work

k now i just went to the sound propertys in the control pannel and went to advanced for speaker settings and it said

ERROR
Directsound setting not available


is the some way to reinstall my sound drive or something to get it working? :'(

Have you updated or put something on in the last two days like codec pack or directx,this is where Directsound comes from.
